The taste of the noodles were great. First impressions were decent, and the food was served within 5 minutes. We ordered a wonton noodle bowl, fried pork bento box, a cold noodle bowl, and Taiwanese cabbage buns. Best part were the cabbage buns, with a nice crunch on the bottom, and filled quite nicely. The wonton noodle satisfied my stomach and my heart. Exactly it's the taste I loved in the old sweet days in my hometown. The atmosphere was homey, like going to a best friend's house for lunch. Would recommend this restaurant!
left Bay Area in 2019. Just came back to visit friends and came to old toro. Same old great taste! Love the hotpot, Taiwanese pickles and mix mix. Looking forward to come again!
Food was very good. Authentic Taiwanese bento boxes, prices are reasonable but are high due to inflation.
Thanks for making such delicious food and it makes me miss my hometown.
Visit this restaurant today. Order beef noodle and pork chop over rice. Everything is ok but I feel not intriguing my enthusiasm about Taiwanese food. Beef noodle has only vegetable and few beef. Pork chop over rice is only seen as a plain lunch box to me. The part of store has been occupied with inventory which I feel eating in a warehouse. Hope this place could make some changes and people will come back again in the future.
Two stars only for food. Server is good at first, but things turns out server getting mad cuz I asked for extra takeout box and a little bowl of soup to add into my noodle. That's not how customer service works, server even start argue with me. Sad for u guys that only have 3.7 stars. That's why u guys getting so low rating, better improve it
I’ve gotten food from this place a few times during the pandemic, and was eager to try dine in again after they reopened.I got there around 11:45 on a Saturday, and the dine-in area was already 80% full. Additionally there was a line of people waiting for take out outside. I was a little intimidated and almost left, but the owner helped me order and I actually got my food quickly.I was going to get the beef noodle soup as per my usual, but saw they had the squid vermicelli special during the weekend and couldn’t resist. The food was yummy! I forgot to ask for no cilantro… had to pick them out. :DI would say food taste, quality, and value is still a solid 5 stars. However, the pure chaos of the place right now knocked it down a star. I was going to buy some more food for tomorrow/next week, but thought better of it and didn’t want to bother them with more orders. I’ll come back in a little bit, once things calm down more and staff gets more used to the operation.
Food options were limited - quite a few items weren't available when we visited. What we did get were all delicious, especially the beef noodle soup.Servers are eager but could use more training.More than one thing was served to the wrong table.
Do you want some amazingly delicious Taiwanese food? Are you willing to put up with a restaurant with a rather inefficient order/pickup setup? If you said yes to both, then Old Taro is the place to go!Back when Old Taro was located on Thornton, they were my go-to for a solid and delicious pork chop rice plate. The pork would be juicy yet crispy, and the stewed meat that adorned the rice was just the right amount of savory without being too salty.Recently, I ordered a bunch of rice balls and bento boxes for a picnic. While I didn't eat any of the bento boxes, the original-style and the original-style-with-egg were amazing. The chinese donut in the middle was crunchy, there was enough pork floss to provide texture without being dry to chew through, and the layer of the rice wrapping everything wasn't too thick. The chinese sausage version of the rice ball went a little bit overboard with the pickled mustard greens, however. I do regret not getting some soymilk to go with the rice balls; it would've really completed the Taiwanese breakfast set.As efficient as the single staff member manning the desk inside the store is, though, the one-line approach means that ordering ahead (either by commenting on their Friday and Saturday Facebook posts or by calling ahead) doesn't actually save you all that much time. Just keep that in mind if time is of the essence. If you need vegetarian options, some of the dishes can be modified -- their fish bento box can be pescatarian-friendly (the stewed egg in the box is stewed with pork but lives in its own compartment, however), and their standard rice balls can be made without pork floss. But generally speaking, it's not a vegetarian-friendly restaurant.Credit card payments are subject to a 4% surcharge, cash isn't. At their old location, debit was accepted without a surcharge, but that may not be the case anymore, as their previous location didn't accept credit cards.
Although it is only take out, food quality is very good. It's menu includes many items traditional to Taiwanese night markets. These are rarely found in Bay area. Prices are reasonable and staff is friendly and efficient.
