I've been here about 5 times now and the food is very good. I only come here for breakfast so I haven't tried the other non breakfast items yet. I mostly get the country fried steak and eggs with the potatoes and french toast. It's rarely a miss and mostly a hit. The waiter service is fantastic. I have no complaints with that. The servers are on the ball and they get rewarded in doing so. If my cups are empty, they refill it quickly. I'm always asked early on how the food is. One thing about dine in restaurants is the service. That is critical and this restaurant has it down well. The food is fantastic. Only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because last time I came here the potatoes were way undercooked along with the country fried steak. Obviously it got fixed, but it's just annoying having to wait for another plate while my spouse either eats or her food gets cold for having to wait. Like I said earlier, it's usually a hit.
Had the worst experience at this restaurant. I came in with my girlfriend and her daughter for my birthday breakfast. We were seated fairly quickly. We ordered coffee and water before ordering our breakfast. It took a while before our drinks came and I showed him my free breakfast coupon on my phone and we ordered our food. 15 minutes later our server, Jibari let us know there was one order ahead of ours so our food will be out soon, but he was going on a break so another server will be assisting us. We noticed 3 tables in our area people were seated and given their food orders and we were still waiting. After around 30 more minutes and nobody paying any attention to our table, not even refill of coffee I approached front of house cashier, Ashleign I was polite and asked if she could explain what was the delay. She walked over to counter in front of kitchen and without speaking to anyone turned around and walk over to our table. She then began speaking very loud and rude, you know folks it's busy back there it's friday the holiday weekend so the wait is a little long. Everyone has to wait a little longer. So my girlfriend tried to explain why we were wondering, the cashier got even louder and started yelling over her. The whole restaurant was watching even customers on the other side of the restaurant stood up at their tables. My girlfriend got louder and told her that our waiter said there was one order ahead of ours, someone else was gonna be bringing it out, and they would be assisting us because he was going on a break, and no one has come to our table. We havent got our food or even refills all this time. Ashleign's response was well your server is on a break and breaks are 30 minutes and walked away. My girlfriend's daughter was talking to her, but she just continued walking away. Another server came up and said she would be our new server and brought our refills, 10 minutes later brought our stone cold food and gave the excuse that the waffle, (1) waffle in our whole order was the hold up of our entire order. My girlfriend said, that's bs because the whole table order is stone cold even the waffle. So what happened was, our order was put in, our server Jibari went on his break, no one was asked to cover our table, our food died in the window, the cashier Ashleign was horrible and she should be fired just for the way she was yelling and causing a scene with a customer, we were lied to by telling us the waffle order was the hold up and on top of that I was charged for my free meal. Charged $81 for the worst food and worst customer service I have ever experienced. Will never go there again. Was ripped off to boot! Update: just looked at carrot cake I purchased to go(before all this happened). Girlfriend got sick after eating half of it. Turned over cake. Mold!!!! Mold carrot cake
ordered 2 cold dishes, watched as 2 other tables received their hot dishes. waited 30+ minutes, asked server and server advised she doesn't have control over the kitchen. walked out after speaking to manager. not acceptable. need to manage your ticket times better. better. Manager offered no valid reason for the issue.
Lunch. Google search listed Black Bear Diner as having good chicken fried steak dinners. I went to the restaurant for lunch. they do not take reservations. Seated with no waiting. Fast service and very good food.

Went to the Black Bear Restaurant in El Cajon this morning and had the worst breakfast in my life. Ordered my eggs over medium....they came back over hard and cold. It was like chewing on rubber. Corn beef hash was very dry and cold. Hash browns were over cooked and cold. The only thing decent on the plate was the biscuit and coffee. I shared these concerns with the waitress and she didn't give a damn. It takes a lot of effort to screw up a basic breakfast and I will never again go to this establishment.
Wonderful tasting food, huge portions, great prices! And you can even sign up for the birthday special with your email! There has never been anything that I've gotten here that I've not enjoyed thoroughly!
Visited for the first time. There is almost always a line out the door so I figured it must be good. We went in for breakfast. My friend had eggs and hash browns, I had the cinnamon French toast. Both plates were good but nothing great. Good portions, friendly staff but the coffee was weak on both servings. The mimosas were however good. Nice family place with plenty of Bear decorations. We'll need to try dinner to compare quality between breakfast and dinner. I'll get back with you soon..
