I picked up 3 bentos today. This is the first time I was actually impressed with the quality of sushi in the Bay Area. This is one of those places where the take-out experience is so good that you actually want to dine in at some point. Highly recommend, and since it seems like the owner is reading every review: I will see you at the restaurant!

Excellent food!! Freshest sushi! Excellent customer service!! Sunny responded back immediately. This is the first time an establishment texted me back and apologized for missing my call. Rather than waiting to place an order, I had ordered a bento box online. Wow! Wow! Wow! The sushi was sitting on fresh banana leaves! The attention to detail was fabulous!! Go if u want exceptional sushi!! Don't wait! This place will soon be packed!! Due to Covid, they r currently short staff and can only respond via text. Yay! The residences of Castro Valley r lucky to have this wonderful sushi place!!

Food quality: 4.0Service: 5Atmosphere: 4.5This was our second time here, first time we had Chef Jason and this Tuesday we had Chef Henry. Both chefs are very friendly and their sushi were good. We preferred Chef Jason’s cut though :) Some appetizers were different than last time. When in January, there was no chawanmushi. The fishes they used now are also different. Rice is less sour and more towards the salty side. The manager told us that they would go back to the edomae more sour type of rice in winter for the winter time fishes. The overall dining experience went well and we would say quality has improved compared with that in January. They now have tables.Only disappointment is that Hochitea dessert is gone and now it’s homemade Matcha Ice Cream, which was not bad but not a comparison to Hochi.By the way, we booked our reso in March. We came yesterday this past Tuesday, price was still $89. We thought it was $105 as their website says, but looking at the bill we saw it was still $89. Not sure if anyone cares. Seems like they have grace period for the transition.

I'd give the cuisine 4.5 stars, however, the management 3 stars.I went there last week and had a positive experience. The food is nice in general, and chef Henry is kind and professional. I enjoy how he describes the fish and displays his enthusiasm. The red miso soup was the only course I didn't enjoy because it was too salty for me.I saw another review that mentioned their price increase, and I had the same issue. I received the confirmation email three days before our appointment, but I noticed the price had gone up from $89 to $105, which is strange given we had paid a deposit and they had said that "all sales are final." I emailed the restaurant and received a response within a few hours.(We are fortunate in comparison to another customer who made an effort to contact them). However, they did not honor the initial pricing at the outset, and they offered to assist us if we wanted to cancel the appointment. Even though they eventually honored the $89 under their manager's permit, the communication process was not as easy as I had hoped. Who knows what would happen if we didn't ask?

Had high hopes of high value omakase because seeing many great reviews from different places, but somewhat disappointed:- they raised price although we’ve “paid” full price at booking. they eventually honored the original price but we had to ask for it. No star is deducted for this reason but think need to mention it in my review.- people talk about great value-price ratio at this place, but it’s 12 courses (vs. 20 you usually get at ~$200 places) so it’s very likely you have to order supplements, which can easily increase your order by 50%+ e.g 3 uni nigiri set is $39.- appetizer and sashimi were alright, but nigiri were just OK. Specific ones were simply bad. e.g. the third nigiri was way too “fishy” almost feels like not fresh. Unfortunately the friend I went with had the same feeling about it. Although the average were OK, the bad ones left the strongest impression that I cannot get rid of- desert (the mango one) was so sloppy, I can probably get better one from a 711…- the last tiny thing is they charge 20% service fee(which is fine to me) and taxed on it too, it’s just few dollars but is kinda wired.Overall it’s a mediocre experience and I probably would not come back again especially with increased price.

Excellent food and excellent service!

I can say without a doubt that Tancho reaches my top 2 spot for favorite restaurants. They have unmatched levels of personal service and attention to detail that honestly sets the standard for high end fine dining experience. Sunny and his crew - chef Jason, Wilson (seasonal washoku chef), and Nagai (seasonal chef, Jason’s mentor) have all been an absolute delight to meet and to be served by.Tancho serves omakase with a couple of styles of sushi - edomae & Kansai. With both traditional and more modern takes of sushi, I’ve found all the pieces to be fresh and delicious, and always exciting to see the new kitchen dishes to accompany the sushi.

Superb. Excellent fish. Attentive and friendly service. Extensive sake menu.

I'm by no means an expert in sushi, however, I would describe myself as a lover of eating sushi. Omakse-style restaurants are hard to come by on this side of The Bay and I cant express my happiness and gratitude that we have an establishment like this in the East Bay.I ordered two of the Omakase boxes togo and all I can say is wow. The rice used is not your typical sushi rice as it is a blend of 2 kind or rice cooked with red vinegar. That combined with the fish really created a new type of taste for me. The cuts of fish given to you vary and depend on what cuts were brought in so, dont look a one picture and expect it to receive the same product. The cuts of fish are a little thinner than I am used to but still packed plenty of flavor when you eat it. I rather have a thinner cut of something amazing than a thick cut of something that is just okay.A lot of time and care went into preparing the food as well as packaging. I wished I took pictures of how well everything was packed as well as the box itself but, I was hungry. I'll definitely come back for take-out and look forward to actually dining in at this place. It's such a gem and I would like this place to stay as long as possible.

It was one of the best sushi places in the states. I’m from Tokyo and I have had many good sushi places including Michelin star restaurants. The take out box was so neat and attention to detail.
