A mainstay of Berkeley, I've been going here since I was a child. I'll always love this place. The homemade potato wedges, the seasoned eggs, even the beans with the eggs Benedict, seasoned to perfection. A pillar of the community. Long live Homemade Cafe!
I came here for a Sunday brunch. I only ordered chocolate chip pancakes, sausage and hot chocolate. The hot chocolate came right away. After an hour someone came up to me and asked, "Ma'am, did you order any food? " I told her I ordered an hour ago. She asked who I ordered from. I pointed out the waiter. She walked up to him and said there's no ticket for that table. After some discussion they said the order was ready. I asked for the check and a to go box. I was half way across the street when I realized they did not give me the sausage. I came back in and the waiter looked at me like, "what do you want?" I told him I wanted my sausage. I heard the cook say it would be another 4 minutes. The waiter told me to have a seat. I told him I didn't expect to wait this long and had him give me a refund. No apologies or anything. Don't go here unless you enjoy wasting time. There's a built in 20% tip so I guess the wait staff doesn't give a f%@k about service. The pancakes were good though.
I used to love eating here, but can’t see myself coming again after my last experience. Waited over 45 minutes for food that never came, then a rat ran across the dining room causing everyone to clear out. If you charge an automatic 20% gratuity, it’s your responsibility to provide good service and that was not being met even before the rodent showed up.
Agreeing with Cody here - if you're going to tack on an automatic 20%, you still should provide good service. We were here when a rat ran across the dining room and quite literally scared several people out of the restaurant. We waited a long time to be seated and had already ordered, so we only decided to stay because we were starving at that point - otherwise we would have just walked out.The food was fine, but quite pricey for what it was. Weirdest part of the experience was that none of the servers acknowledged what happened with the rat. No explanation, reassurance, or apology about the ordeal. They never came over to check how our food was, give us more water, or even offer boxes/the check.
I've had better, and 1 of my pancakes wasn't cooked all the way...they asked 1/2 way through my meal can they get me another 1 sorry I'm sure you saw me picking at it way before. Was never asked if my coffee needed a refill. Just not my type of service I'm used too.
I've been going to Homemade now for 20+ years. Now I live in SF and.i still male the trek about once per month. Best pancakes in the world!
Quaint indoor&outdoor space on the corner. Food is delish..service is great!
A Berkeley institution. I've eaten here for thirty years, it's always comforting, tasty, filling and just plain good. Kinda wish they'd bring the Eggs Benedict options back. But I'll continue to happily give them my money for that wonderful food.
Great place for breakfast. Kind of a greasy spoon diner. But they have some healthier options also. The service is fast. The corned beef hash is my go to order. The omelettes are also good.
We waited over 30 minutes for excellent food. And please make sure the coffee is good, aka what people expect. I checked with my girlfriend, and we agreed it was more than 30 minutes until we got the food. Just please check the system. We were inside, and the patio was very busy, maybe the priority was out of order. And check the coffee.
