Amazing pizza, but the world’s rudest IDGAF customer service you’ll ever encounter. I have been eating Gioia’s pizza since 2007. Their pizza is consistently good, but it boggles my mind that the counter staff has ALWAYS been the nastiest, rudest person you’ll ever encounter. Why?? We’re literally tipping you well and giving you business. The service is almost comically horrendous….don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself!
GIOIA (/joy-a/) Italian noun means a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. My husband really loves this place. He loves to try pizzas whenever he can.. Kids and I got to try them today! I really liked them. Probably one of the best pizza I have ever had. They have 2 locations. (Berkeley and San Francisco). The crust is perfectly sublime, the flavors of the toppings are incredible. The delicious thin crust of most of the pizza is complimented by the chewiness of the edge. Yum!!! Anchovi pizza is a little too salty but still very tasty. I had Sicilian Sausage with pickle jalapeños. Soooo good! My kids said this is the best pepperoni pizza! The website said "We don't eat pizzas with a fork & knife. New Yorkers consider that uncivilized". ? (Asians served pizza with fork and knives for real in many countries. I am not kidding!)
Best pizza in the East Bay, end of story... Feels like a proper NYC pizza with a slight NorCal twist. Amazingly soft, yet firm crust and classic flavors.
Gioa’s in the best pizza in the East Bay as far as I’m concerned. I don’t really mess with other pizza places anymore after discovering this spot. Not a sit down restaurant, grab and go.
Fantastic slices and whole pies. NY style with quality Cal/Ital toppings. The spinach with garlic as well as the pep slices are just outstanding. Great chopped salad too. Best slice in the East Bay??
Fabulous pizza by the slice or whole, all day. 6 or more types to choose from by the slice. Perfect Thin crust. Quick service. Take out only. You know it’s good, there are always people on the street placing orders.
Wow, wow, wow. Easily the best pizza I’ve had in the Bay Area and up there with the best anywhere. Ordered a pepperoni pizza for delivery and it was amazing. The crust is light, crisp and flaky like a pastry. The sauce, cheese and toppings merge together seamlessly and the texture is just right. Super impressive pizza on many levels.
Gioia pizza is delicious. I've yet to try a flavor that I didn't like. This is our go-to neighborhood pizza spot. To save time, we usually request no heating and then pop our slices into the oven for 5 minutes at home. Texture comes out great. One word of caution: I do not recommend ordering online! CALL if you really want to order ahead for pickup so that you get verbal confirmation that your order will be fulfilled. Better yet (based on other reviews), stick to in-person ordering.I had one bad experience with the online system, when my order processed, card was charged, estimated pickup time provided (1 h 20 min out because it was "busy"), and then when I arrived for pickup at the appointed hour (10 minutes before published closing time), the shop was closed. When I called the next day to request a refund (which was granted), I learned that they were out of takeout boxes so no online orders had been fulfilled that day.
I placed an order online for pickup. Ordered at 4:40, they said it'd be ready at 5:40. I come to pick up the pizza at 5:40 and they tell me they just didn't make it and are closing early. Didn't call to let me know or anything. Needless to say, will not ever be trying to eat here again.
Some phenomenal slices. They opt to reheat the slices to order resulting in a nice crisp crust instead of an oil-logged, lukewarm tabletop heater style.
