This place has always been my go to restaurant at Berkeley. It was so good that I went twice in a row often. I especially loved the friend pork buns. However, last time I went, the dough was severely undercooked to the point where it was just raw flour while the bottoms were burnt. When we sent it back and got another, the meat was off tasting and we ended up not eating anything else. The next day I got food poisoning and suffered from diarrhea. I am soo incredibly disappointed and sad as it was one of my favorite restaurants. The meat and quality of wvery dish was incredibly lacking from any other time I visited. While it is true it has been good most of the time, I think it is important for a restaurant to be consistent. I would not go here for the chance of that one time you could get food poisoning. What a shame since their dumplings were so good. ??
I ordered steamed vegetarian dumplings. The filling was piping hot and very tasty, while the dough outside was cool and dry on the top, tough and stodgy in texture. How do they do that?I'm mystified.I ate 2 of the six because I was so hungry; the other 4 I took to go. At home I threw away the dough and ate the filling with some scrambled eggs.
DOES STEVE LIM WORK HERE!? WE WERE TOO SHY TO ASK! We were craving dumplings and came here after spending all morning at the botanical garden. The noodles were good but the chicken tasted a little weird. However, the A.01 Shanghai-style streamed pork dumplings were so super good! We order two of them and was completely full at the end. The staff was super friendly and nice. We will be come back here for dumplings again ^.^
The overall restaurant was good. THe dumpling were quite tasty and went well together. There were a diverse array of dumplings that all tasted good. A good experience overall.
Tried a number of dishes that were all delicious! Fast service and reasonable prices too!
Very slow service and the xlb pork meat taste like freezer burn dry tough pork. The sjb has a very tough chewy hockey puck rubbery bottom.
I love this place very much, and tend to come here when I’m on campus and searching for Chinese in that area for a simple lunch. The people who provide service are passionate and friendly youngsters, and they can serve you in both English and Chinese languages. They don’t have a very big menu, but they are really good at what they are specialized. Dumplings and Baozi are super delicious, all other small snacks are amazing too. Their main dishes are wonderful too. It’s very interesting that they are specialized in Shanghai food, but at the same time they also offer selected signature dishes from other places in China. One thing though, they still can’t serve alcoholic beverages. The location on Google map is a bit confusing, the restaurant is right on the side of the street, really easy to find!
Quality Chinese place! I’ve tried many of their items in my 3 times dining here and the only item that has fallen short of my expectations was the dry fried chicken. Even then, it wasn’t bad, just not great. Will definitely be returning here! (Can be a bit pricey though)
For the money I'm disappointed. The dumplings were not all fully cooked. Pretty gross to eat dough that's melting. I'll go to the Dumpling Express around the corner. Never had an undercooked meal there.
Been here three times now to dine in and twice for takeout. Their fried pork bao are delicious and the salt and vinegar fish is delicious as well. Barbecue pork bao are also very tasty, one of the best I’ve tried. Shanghai soup dumplings aren’t as soupy as my preference but still okay taste wise. The main con is the price and the wait; the price I think is normal for the area but a bit high for dim sum, and the wait can be up to an hour. I’d highly recommend just not going during high rush times.
