Okay so let me start by saying I almost didn't post this review because I've been coming to this spot for years (including through the pandemic) and it was easily my fav Mexican place in Berkeley. But looking at other recent reviews, I think my experience was in line with them and I need to make sure the management read this. The base burrito is $12 and adding shrimp (which is my fav meat) is another $3. But after $15, you just get beans and rice. Like literally you have to spend around $21, to get your burrito in a decent shape. After tips and the works, you end up with a $26 burrito and you don't even get chips and salsa (it's extra couple of dollars). The salsa bar was supposed to be an attraction. And to add to all of this, the limited service they had, no longer exists. You order at the counter, you pick it up and once you're done, you clean up after yourself.I understand pandemic has been tough on businesses and inflation is a thing, but I'm sorry, I can't do a self service $25 burrito that doesn't even come with chips and salsa.
We used to love Cancun. But we will not be back for a while. I agree with other reviewers. The problem is not that they are charging more for food, it's HOW they are doing it. A rice and bean burrito costs the same as a rice and bean burrito with meat. Makes no sense. And its weird to charge people separately for every ingredient in a burrito. When they fix the pricing, we will return. Their burritos are indeed delicious.
It has some decent reviews so I would’ve enjoyed trying it, but when you have a burrito every single thing costs extra, including cheese, and lettuce etc. I only mentioned a couple ingredients but the total showing up on the register was $27, so I turned around and walked out. There’s a chipotle around the corner which for $10 includes most everything and the food is also fresh and quite good.
I had a great quick dinner here before a show at the UC Berkeley theater. The manager was saying hello to all of the customers, asking if anyone has questions about the menu, even being super nice to the carryout delivery people. I ordered some simple tacos, and thought they were very tasty, reasonably priced, and came out promptly.
Remember to show your student ID, there’s a student discount! The food is very tasty here and people are super nice and friendly!Highly recommended!
We bought three entrees, ate 2 for dinner and split the third for a meal, next day. Fresh salsas in a variety of hotness. The quesadilla was the best I've had in a year. Fresh vegetables and chicken. The service is attentive and prompt.
The vegan Al pastor on a crispy taco with cheese is absolutely delicious. I paired that with a fish burrito featuring perfectly cooked and seasoned cod. To top it off, the salsa is the perfect blend of spicy and a little sweet. 10/10
Expensive. Dishonest. Tasteless. While other Mexican restaurants have had their salsa bar going. This place used the pandemic and now food waste as an excuse.Stop playing games and admit you are greedy, charging 75cents for a tiny salsa cup.Thieves!Oh, train your staff not to be rude and bark at customers who have questions. You do not treat your consumers well. I have been coming to this restaurant back when it 1st opened. It's become a disgraceful distant form of itself.
DO NOT COME HERE BASED UPON REVIEWS OLDER THAN 3 YEARS. ITS A BAIT SWITCHFlavorless, costly, no salsa bar, horrible service and rude staff, especially the younger cashiers...they don't seem to want to be there.Seriously, there is far better and cheaper Mexican.I'm not a Chipotle fan, but, you get more per spoonful there than hereYears and years ago...this was a diff restaurant. Same team. But it was diff in that it was delicious, had a salsa bar that was limitless and prices were reasonableThey really went too far with inflation. Avg inflation is 10%. Their total food price went to 25%. I doubt it's because they pay their teams more.Portions fell. Salsa was made to be 1 tiny cap of a cup for 75 cents every time...Greedy.Their hygiene practices leave a lot to be desired.Shame.A lot of their old customers have found new spots, where the salsa flows like wine and the value remains, as does taste.
Don't be fooled by reviews older than 2 years.Since 2 years to present, the salsa bar disappeared, prices have gone up on 3 occasions, Quality and service is down...as is taste. Those old reviews harkened back to a restaurant that technically doesn't exist. What you have now is owners breaking up the business amongst family and divided the diff restaurants. So goes the rumorsRegardless, 75 cents for a salsa cup that's tiny...like really tiny...shameAnd then, they advertise the salsa bar. But when you get there...it hasn't been active for 2+ yearsIf they lie and cheat so much...you have to question the rest. And your wallet is gonna feel it.Skip this place.
