I hate not being able to give restaurants with good food 5 stars. This restaurant is so nostalgic and has pretty good food for the most part!We've come here for years, but have limited it to only a couple times recently because of poor service. Our waitresses have been unfriendly and slow.The food is good - my only real complaint is the guacamole and salsa (not the pico) taste like they come from a tube. C'mon Mexicali...Would love to update this review the next time we visit!
Great food. Service was a bit slow and the waitress never asked anyone if they wanted their drinks refilled. The food was great but the service not so much. Either need more waitresses so that they can tend to their tables more or just need better waitresses that check on their tables and are efficient with their time.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY AT THIS PLACE! THE FOOD SUCKS & IS OVER PRICED!...was traveling south through California and stopped in Bakersfield for the night. I was very hungry after most of the day on the road. I searched for a Mexican food restaurant and found the Mexicali Restaurant very close to the hotel I was staying in so I walked 2 minutes (less than 300 feet) to the restaurant and ordered 2 (2 taco) dinner plates to go with a salad for my wife and myself. THEY MADE ME WAIT MORE THAN 20 MINUTES. When finally a staff emoyee asked me "have you gotten your food yet?" So I told him "no". He then pardoned himself and said "let me see what's going on". Then the waitress/cashier brings me my food saying "oh! Here's your food". I then walked less than 300 feet back to my hotel and experienced COLD, SOGGY TACOS WITH COLD BEANS AND RICE, NO EATING UTENSILS AND NO NAPKINS ALL FOR $45.00!!!!!! I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE DISAPPOINTED AND THEN TASTED THE FOOD.... IT WAS BLAND, WITHOUT FLAVOR AND LACKED SEASONING AND THE SALSA TASTED LIKE CATSUP SAUCE.... I WALKED BACK WITH THE FOOD STUFFED BACK IN THE BAG AND TOLD THEM "I'M LIVID" THEN THE OWNER TOLD ME TO STOP BEING RUDE. I TOLD HIM 'DON'T PUT ME DOWN" AND DEMANDED MY MONEY BACK..... TERRIBLE SERVICE ... BAD FOOD... AND A CONDESCENDING MANAGER/OWNER....
A fancy upgrade to Tacobell. The tacos are $6, and they are not real carne asada tacos. They are ground beef, and come in a tostada shell just like Taco Bell. You pay for the ambience, the food is lackluster. Back to the tacos. The menu doesn’t tell you they are hard shell tacos.The chips and salsa…so sad. It’s like they took left over enchilada sauce and put it in a dipping cup. Sour, no flavor, no spice.Skip the wait and don’t pay extra, they sell the same food at Taco Bell at a much lower price.
Definitely not the Mexicali of old. I always order Esther's delight and it had absolutely no spice and it was just barely warm. So sad!
We ate there twice.. food was good the first time we went but service was not...the waitresses forgot some parts of our order, they didn't give us silverware until we asked them after receiving our food..the second time we came back to give it another try a few days later, different waitress, even worst than the other...she was not polite, it felt like the customers would bother her, she basically just threw the plates on our table.. she seemed to try to be nicer only when she brought the receipt and then after we paid by card, she came back to us to ask of we were done with the tip.. They should revise the personnel..
Has been our family favorite for more than 40 years! No Mexican food compares. Always fresh and hot, and consistent. Yummy nachos and pizzadilla! Amazing shredded beef.
Great atmosphere. Had high hopes of this place. The food is not too good though. Had the pizzadilla with beans and rice, not so tasty. My wife got the Chile Verde burrito and Chile Colorado burrito (small burritos combo). This place is a landmark for Bakersfield but the food needs reevaluation.
I remember coming here with my family and it was great. me and my fiancé go and we are seated in a separate room from everyone else. I was addressed in english while my fiancé was addressed in Spanish the whole time. The food was okay but not the greatest. Did not have a great experience and was treated like children. Will not be coming back and will not recommend.
Pretty expensive mexican restaurant. Ordered chilaquiles(not on the menu), came with a small serving of red sauce chilaquiles, beans and two eggs. And this plate is 20.99?! Insanity. Food tasted good, but not worth that price.
