I really, really, really wanted to like this restaurant, but was disappointed. We waited a long time for a table and went to get a drink from the bar - the bartender was preparing drinks for the servers, the people crammed into bar, and the people walking up to get a drink. She was doing the best she could, but it would have been better if she had some assistance. When we were finally seated we were given water. But no one came to refill our water during the entire dinner. It was nice to receive a basket of chips and salsa to tide us over until our meal was ready. The chicken fajitas were okay, but not great - was only given 2 small corn tortillas with the meal, which was insufficient for the amount of filling. The waiter and another gentleman came over for “drive-by” check-ins and asked if everything was okay, but were already moving on before we could respond. We had wanted to ask for more tortillas and water, but it seemed like their check-.in was task and they weren’t really interested in a response. I had the tropical pescada- the fish was done well and the vegetables and salsa were good, by the rice was undercooked and some rice was still crunchy. At the end of the meal I told the server about the rice so he could pass onto the kitchen. He apologized at that time and when we paid he kinda apologized again. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be back.
Food was tasty, fresh, and piping hot, price was fair. Lovely bartender in bar could smile and be more friendly. My waiter was great, and the Mariachi band was awesome. Ambiance was great.
The food was so delicious and authentic. So much flavor & perfectly made. I only gave 4 stars because customer service was slow and not very energetic. Our waiter took awhile to remove dishes that we were done with & took awhile to refill waters & bring check. Other than that, quite amazing! This place is extremely busy so I highly recommend making reservations!
Great food, front end needs some work. It took two visits to dine. First night, hostess said 60 minute wait but they close in 30 minutes. Second try, we arrived earlier. Our phone number got entered wrong in the paging system. Told wait was 60 minutes even though there were lots of empty tables. After 70 minutes, went to ask how much longer. Waited a few more minutes, member of party asked again about an empty table near front door. Git seated, then hostess came looking for us because our table was ready. Food was very good and appeared in 7 minutes. I would ask the owners to get some training or better technology to manage the customer throughput.
Chimichangas tasty. Tableside mixed guacamole a real delicious treat! Chicken Tortilla Soup was fantastic! Friendly service!
I’m sorry to say I cannot recommend this restaurant despite all these positive reviews. The wait (over an hour on a week night and we got there just at opening) is just not worth it. Also, there aren’t enough seats outside (and NONE inside) for how many people are there waiting. I wouldn’t have even minded the wait if the food/drinks/service were up to par. But none were. We went to the bar (several doors done and I guess actually part of this place but it feels like a separate business) to wait but it was packed. You have to stand in a LONG line to get a drink……no waitress to take your order. We tried two different (very watered down) margaritas and they were so bad we didn’t finish them. Once seated (inside what looked to be maybe an old house so it had several small rooms) it still felt crowded even though we were by a window. The service was less than adequate to be nice about it. The food was mediocre……certainly not up to the hype nor worth the wait. Needless to say, we won’t be returning. I’m sure there is better food and service in Tucson.
Last month my sister and I visited El Charro in El Presidio. We had been pandemic-waiting for at least a year to make the trip from Phoenix. The food is outstanding. The Mole was absolutely delicious with all the flavors we were anticipating. It reminded us of the food we grew up eating so many years ago. I have one complaint but it’s a big one. When we arrived, the host at the door, an older gentleman with glasses, was truly a very rude person. We were told later that he was one of the owners. He should be the last person anyone would want to greet guests as the first point of contact. He was very rude and abrupt with guests and treated everyone like it was a cattle call. At one point I asked him kindly to mellow out and he said he would kick us out before we were even seated. I told him no, we had come a long way and we wanted to enjoy our lunch. He relented but what a poor way to represent such a wonderful restaurant. Everything else about our meal and the service was excellent. A server who witnessed his demeanor quietly apologized to my sister and I and offered us a complimentary dessert. But one person almost, and I say almost ruined the entire trip after a one year wait. Will I go back again? Probably not because it isn’t to my liking to support someone so rude. But my review is for the restaurant and it is an absolutely excellent Mexican restaurant and truly deserves all its praise and honor
Nice place just couldn’t wait an hour and a half for my meal, kitchen must have been to busy. Saw many people that came in later, and were leaving before we even saw our food.
Crazy weekend downtown and the restaurant was packed with a very long wait. Owner was incredibly accommodating and got me right in. Service was immaculate. I’m not here to debate whether or not it’s the “best” Mexican food I’ve ever had — it was TREMENDOUS, and I can say without a doubt that it was the best Mexican Restaurant experience I have had. I will be back next time I’m in town, hands down.
There was quite a line of people waiting outdoors for a table; we got on the list, for 3 people, and were told it would be about 20 minutes. After 30 minutes, people who came after us were being seated; our name was apparently overlooked and then added again to a list. Then the host tried to seat the group who came after us - after we had by then been waiting 45 minutes. The host didn’t seem at all concerned, or apologetic, for overlooking us. Finally seated, we then waited about 15 minutes to just get chips and salsa to tide us over. After all that the food was ok but not worth the wait. I won’t be back.
