Where do I even start? The food was disgusting overall. I ordered a small catfish nugget basket. It was bland and cold. I ordered sweet potato fries...I received it cold and unseasoned. I ordered MacNCheese...It was MacNOil with a cheeselike breadcrumb topping...Ordered brisket and it was flavorless. My kids did NOT like their sandwiches (Blackened Shrimp PoBoy, Andouille Sausage PoBoy, and the Shaved Chicken Sliders). The only thing that may have been worth a bite are the cajun tater tots...but even then, that came to us in such greasy bags. We looked forward to this meal and ended up throwing away almost half of it....we ate what we could get through because we were hungry. I wish I could get my money back.
I’ve been a long time customer and still come back, but have some requests to bring back the “good old days” of Satchmo dining. Pre-pandemic, the tots were in a dedicated fryer- meaning customers who are celiac or have gluten allergies could still gorge on their delicious tots. Once Satchmos shut their doors and then reopened with a limited menu, they took away the dedicated fryer and started mixing the flour items in with tots. Cue the tears. I had hoped that, this far out from limited operations, they would return to their old ways but alas, no tots for me or others like me. Also they removed red beans and rice from their menu entirely which is another travesty, in my humble (but accurate) opinion. That stuff was amazing. So here’s my heartfelt request to use a dedicated fryer and bring back red beans and rice!
This place touts itself as being “voted best B.B.Q. in Flagstaff” until we found out there is only one other B.B.Q. place in Flagstaff, so I guess they had a 50/50 chance at getting it. We ordered the brisket, gumbo, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato fries, coleslaw, and bread pudding. They did not offer any type of “sampler” plate, so we had to settle with this (there were two of us). They also did not include any sides with any of their meats - everything was charged for separately and it added up quick. The above mentioned lunch cost us nearly one hundred dollars! Let me repeat that - the above mentioned lunch for two people was one hundred dollars! The brisket was okay, but that’s about it - no noticeable smoke ring that you usually find in brisket. The gumbo was the same - just okay. An entire pint of gumbo contained exactly two shrimp. Must be a shrimp shortage? Coleslaw was unrecognizable as coleslaw and was absolutely the worst coleslaw I’ve ever tasted. The two types of B.B.Q. sauces that were on our table were mediocre at best. The one saving grace in this meal was the macaroni and cheese. It was actually pretty good. But for one hundred dollars? Are you kidding me? I have eaten at some of the finest cajun and B.B.Q. places throughout the south and I have never heard of being charged prices like this for this type of quality food! They must be pretty proud of their B.B.Q. here at Satchmo’s, but after eating here for myself, I have no idea why. The only reason I am giving this place a three-star (average) rating is because their staff was very friendly and as previously mentioned, the macaroni and cheese was decent. Save yourself a wad of cash and eat somewhere else in Flagstaff.
WOW! Everything we ordered arrived so quickly and tasted delicious. Brisket sliders, special coleslaw, sweet potato fries, mac and cheese, and a special greyhound cocktail served in large family style portions. Great atmosphere and such friendly and professional service!
Catfish was legit!
A wonderful surprise as we stopped on our way back to Sedona from the Grand Canyon! The food was delicious, the wait staff was friendly and hard working. It is a small place but come with a big appetite.
Food was amazing. We were driving around by Flagstaff and decided to eat. Looked up BBQ and we liked the idea of BBQ and CajunIt did not disappoint! We are moving up to Cottonwood soon and will drive the hour or so to eat here again. The staff we very nice and took good care of us. Thank you for a great experience!
My friend and I were vacationing in Flagstaff and tried this place because of online reviews while looking for a BBQ place. We shared burnt ends, pulled pork, baked beans, and the mac and cheese. It was all incredible. We had 1/2 pound meat plates and it was very reasonably priced. Both meats were tender and juicy and they don't smother the pork in BBQ sauce which was nice. The mac and cheese was AMAZING when it was hot, and just as good cold the next morning.. The place itself was very low-key , but had a steady procession of locals picking up orders while we were there.
Standing in line to place your order takes forever. Who wants a pound of tater tots? The pound of Mac and Cheese was less than appealing. The jambalaya was a TEN!!! I may be too old to enjoy this type of place.
Great place for a family! Very reasonably priced. Amazing food!! Our favorite's were the pulled pork, chicken and my boys loved the ribs. The coleslaw is a must get! This restaurant is the perfect casual place for great, quick food after a long day of hiking!!
