Being a former Chicagoan, I grew up on Giordano's and Barraco's deep dish pizza. When a friend told me about Tortuga's, I knew I'd have to make the trip from Huntsville just to try it. Was it good? Yes. Was it worth the 2-hour drive for lunch? Meh. If you're already in the Birmingham area and want to get a 90% authentic Chicago Deep Dish, check them out. Good pies take time, so I recommend ordering 30 minutes before you arrive. Then, you'll only have to wait about 15 minutes for the pizza to come out of the oven.
Tortugas makes the best deep dish pizza in town. Keep in mind that it takes about 40 min to cook a deep dish. Very clean flavor on the vegetarian pie but tomatoes dominate making it difficult to taste spinach and mushrooms.
Best pizza in Birmingham hands down. The owner, Matt, is just a top notch person. I am originally from Chicago and I discovered his parents location in Hoover several years ago and was so excited when they opened a downtown location. I would crawl ten miles on pins and needles just to watch someone eat this pizza. Side note, the lasagna is on point too.
I am originally from Chicago so when I found out about Tortuga's I knew I had to try it. The pizza is absolutely amazing. The staff are always awesome. I just really wish they would open a location near Cullman, AL.
They did an amazing job with their pizza. Best Chicago style pizza I've had outside of Chicago! It felt like I was having a pizza outside of Wrigley Field. Very nice and welcoming staff with a very clean and enjoyable atmosphere.
Do not try and eat more than two slices of the Chicago style pizza! You will explode. Their pizza is so good you might try and eat more than you should.

Tortugas is one of the best deep dishes you can find, not just in Birmingham, but anywhere. I've had Lou Malnati's and Gino's East and Giodano's (all Chicago-based deep dish eateries), and Tortugas holds their own against those titans. As an avid deep dish fan this is my go-to place in Birmingham for pizza. I usually get the Carne Special (photo) as a carry-out. As with all deep dish it takes 45-60 minutes from when you order to when it's ready. But I can guarantee you that it's WORTH it!!! We are so lucky to have such amazing deep dish here down south.
