Although I wouldn't consider myself picky, there are definitely certain tastes I enjoy more than other. Perhaps above all other foods, I am a lover of the flavor imparted when grilling over charcoal. As such, upon learning of Zakkushi's binchotan grilled specialties from my girlfriend, we were quick to frequent the restaurant on a recent visit to Toronto. We managed to find a table around 9pm at the Queen location, and upon entering the restaurant were greeted with a lively atmosphere full of eating and drinking. We were quick to order a round of drinks and a multitude of skewers from the menu, and after a short wait they arrived. I enjoyed certain skewers more than others, and found a mushroom, chicken thigh and grilled rice ball to be the highlights of my meal. Other skewers didn't dissapoint, but weren't necessarily excellent either. After finishing my first drink, I ordered one of the new specials, a yuzu tequila lemonade. It was fantastic, with the alcohol pairing well with the acidity of the agrume and just the right amount of sweetness. To pair with my drink, I also opted for the wagyu skewer, and it arrived with a side of scallions and garlic. Of all the meats, the wagyu was the inferior option, with a weird chewy texture and not particularly tasty. After being asked for our thoughts on the skewer, our server was kind enough to provide us with another skewer free of charge, as well as taking the price off the final bill. Unfortunately, even at the second time of asking the texture remained the same, and my personal advice would be to avoid the premium cut when visiting.Overall, Zakkushi has an alluring mixture of tasty, skewered meats and a good selection of drinks that would make for a great evening spent eating and drinking.
This is one of the Best Japanese skewers place in town. I will give it 4.7 out of 5.0, compare to the other franchise at Carlton only 4.3. for the following reasons. The seating are much roomy and comfortable. Food taste better and more juicy comparatively. Their karaage chicken is a MUST try. Wagyu beef is great. Service is excellent.
Had a lot of fun at this place. Drink some beer and started ordering like its ayce. The price was reasonable for the quality. I highly recommend premium platter and the wagyu balls and free range chicken skewer. Some menu items comes in sea salt variant and i would recommend trying some of that because teriyaki sauce will make everything taste similar to teriyaki sauce.
One of the only authentic and traditional izakayas in the city! Can't recommend highly enough. If your Japanese and you've been let down all over the city by chain Japanese restaurants, make a stop here. You won't be sorry. Takowasabi was to die for, all the yakitori are great! Lots of awesome southern Japan style dishes!
Take Out: The take out was okay, slightly overpriced for bar food, but I would still go back once indoor dining becomes available. Their duck was very overcooked to the point where the natural flavour of the duck was gone. However, their cheese tsukune was quite good! This food pairs best with an alcoholic beverage, so it may not be the best for takeout, unless you have drinks at home. Overall it was okay, but I am more interested in dine-in as their sake selection looked pretty good. Hope to try again once dine-in becomes available.
The atmosphere of this restaurant reminded me of Japan, and it was really nice! The food is great. If you're looking for a great tasting yakitori spot, please go here. You're probably not going to regret it. They've got that smokey flavour in their food that you're probably looking for and they have a lot of interesting menu items. Their drinks are pretty good, and I believe they have seasonal drinks that they change up from time to time.Their side dishes are okay. I think the consensus that I have with the people I dine with is that the noodles are a little salty, and so are some of their other prepared dishes, but if you're looking for something like a grilled fish or any grilled meat, you're not going to go wrong (unless you're not into their more exotic menu).
The food is amazing especially the beef is one of the best in Toronto. The beer is also fresh. A great memory served my trip in Canada.
Would Return. Would recommend.First - they use charcoal to prepare their skewers, giving all of them an amazing smokey aroma and the high heat ensures that there's a good amount of char, without making your meat dry.Good tap.Vibes are good, you'll have a great food experience here.
You get what you pay for - you are paying top dollar for the best quality. The restaurant setting is very warm and cozy with very friendly staff! Highly recommend getting their Mega Pint of beer!
Nice place, fair place, but you need to wait for half hour to get your table
