This place had phenomenal food and service. Keep in mind this restaurant only accepts cash. I ordered the sweet cherry soup. This soup, which had a cream base, was very pleasing. It also wasn’t too sweet. The beet salad was made from fresh beets. I found the weiner schnitzel tender, breaded perfectly, and scrumptious. The mash potatoes were the only thing that was ho-him. However, the mashed potatoes complimented the weiner schnitzel well. In regard to service, all of my food came out of the kitchen very quickly! I would highly recommend this establishment.
This place is absolutely fantastic. If you dare try their wiener schnitzel make sure to bring an empty stomach lol ITS HUGE!. All their food is more than incredible I can't say it enough. The girl that took my order and served me was so nice too everyone was just so sincere. Amazing place, I rarely give 5's but I'd give this one a 6 if I could. I've been here twice I'm going back for more. If anyone that works there sees this keep up the great work!
The last and best of bloor’s Hungarian spots - a real throwback. Room has been recently refreshed, but still has the same vibe. Order the “platter for two” for four.
I had one of the schnitzel sandwiches with potatoes and a small salad and it was all delicious. The soups I've ordered here in the past have always been very rich and flavourful as well so you can't go wrong with those menu options either. Support this Bloor St. institution if you are a fan of or curious about Hungarian/Eastern European cuisine.
The Wiener Schnitzel is officially being sold as Veal but it is indeed Pork. Perogies are being bought from No Frills for $2/bag and sold for 6 times the price telling guests they are homemade. They are lying straight into the customers face about both menu items. Not even getting into the fact that they tell you to give guests only 5-6 pieces of meat for the goulash soup they order and pay $11.95 for!Drinks (especially alcohol) are overpriced! Not sure how they are justifying this but I guess it is pure greed at this point.Kitchen is clean, however, the kitchen staff is not. They are all smokers and DO NOT wash their hands after coming back from smoking. Most staff unvaccinated and they do not wear masks in the back.Very very rude owner, occasionally threatening guests to call the police on them for a mistake she made. She will not throw any food that has gone bad or does not look good anymore out but rather warn it up and serve it to the guests (seen that many many times).Daughter works only a few hours a week and has a very bad attitude about the place and staff. Tells staff that she can talk to them the way she pleases since she is the owner when in reality it is her mother who owns that place. But I guess being the daughter of the owner is an official title and job description now!Despite everything their food is basic at the most with no spices, salt or pepper added. Not sure why this place is so hyped up but it definitely is not what it looks like or everybody thinks what it is!
There is only one restaurant I can say I've been going to my whole life and it is this place. It opened in 1961 and has been a landmark in the Annex neighbourhood of Toronto. The food is consistently great. You can't go wrong with the classic Weiner Schnitzel with mash and cucumbers. I recommend the raspberry soda to drink and always take them up on the free bread! If there is a place in Toronto you must try, it's this one. Oh! and don't forget to bring cash. 10/10*Picture shows only half the meal as the meals are so huge!
Tried the platter for two and unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. Despite the assortment of items included in the platter, the only "good" items were the sausage and cabbage roll. The schnitzel was dry and overcooked on the edges. The potatoes were dry and nearly inedible, as if they had been sitting on some sort of hot plate all day. The dumplings must be an acquired taste...though they lacked taste to begin with.
If healthy dining is essential to your enjoyment of a meal, I can suggest a variety of alternate places to eat. In fact, simply avoid all Hungarian restaurants. However, if outstanding tasting food is the primary objective of your dining experience, there are few places that deliver as consistently and as heartily as Country Style. This place has been around for as long as I can recall. The portions are as generous as they are delicious. Having grown up in a Hungarian home, I can say, unequivocally, this is authentic Hungarian food at its best, save for my late mother’s kitchen. All main courses are phenomenal, but do yourself a favour and have a Boblavesh (bean soup) to start and save room for the palascinta (Hungarian crepes) for desert. To miss these two items should be criminalized.
Omg!This place is a staple in the AnnexSuper Natur Schnitzel with a side of sourkraut! Just like Babba’s!!Highly recommended
I've had this spot on my list for almost a decade. I gathered 4 pals and finally got to dig into the menu! Platter for 2 is massive, along with an extra order of cabbage rolls and liver w/ dumplings, this was the perfect fix between 5.I came in with no expectations because I don't know a thing about Hungarian food, so I did find that the schnitzels needed extra salt. My faves were the liver, beet salad, dumplings & cabbage rolls!
