Gourmet Malaysia is a Scarborough staple that has been serving authentic Malaysian food for years. Some of my favourites are their mee goreng, stir fried belachan greens, char kway teow, nasi lemak and roti canai. They have quite an extensive menu so there have been the occasional miss but the classics are always great. They have wok hei flavours and strong punchy flavours. I recommend asking for their homemade sambal on the side. It's filled with umami seafoody flavours and pairs great with all their dishes.
My husband & I came here for dinner with 4 of our friends. I initially made a reservation for 8 people on a Friday evening at 6 p.m. & asked to keep our large table even though our numbers changed and they kindly obliged. We decided on doing a family style dinner so that we could all taste multiple dishes. We ordered their Special Gourmet Malaysian Platter, Deep Fried King Prawns with Salt & Garlic Chili, Indonesian Fried Rice and Banana Leaf Grilled Stingray, Roti Cannai chicken & beef and Singapore Laksa. The platter was tasty though the spring rolls & mango salad was mediocre however the fish cake, satay and shrimp rolls was delicious. The deep fried Prawns & fried rice was nothing special. The stingray was different so we quite enjoyed it. The Roti Cannai both chicken and beef was good however I found the portion size was small (I think there were 2 small pieces of chicken in it). Lastly, the laska was okay however I've had much tastier homemade laksa before.Overall, I found the portions of everything quite small & the food taste was nothing to rave about. Also, I read plenty reviews that the service here is bad & the servers rude however we did not experience this at all. They were all very kind & attentive.
Edit---It may seem whoever manages this page takes online reviews as a personal attack rather than taking steps into improving their business.Trying to defend your establishment is one thing, trying to attack your customer by asking if they ran a restaurant is another. How this place survived for 20 years is irrelevant as this restaurant started at a time where it didn't have to compete as much as it does today. There's definitely restaurants in Toronto that serve better tasting food and more reasonable prices. Not sure why 3x mini roti canai served with a canned Yeo's Chicken Curry is priced as such, but I too run a business and know what overhead costs are.If you as a business owner only see these reviews as a form of a personal attack, then please refrain from replying to customer reviews altogether. With your 20 years of experience, please adapt to a new generation of customers, and business practices. Sure you have every right to voice your opinion, but so do customers.FYI: I've visited most recently on February 18, 2022 at approx 1 PM.Changing from 3/5 to 2/5 as owner/page manager response could've been better.I'd definitely have a teh tarik if I ever stop by in the future.---Food had always been on the subpar-decent range. Extremely overpriced for what it's worth and its only saving grace being that it's one of the only Malaysian restaurants that's with a large enough dining hall to accommodate a larger crowd, and they don't serve pork.Service could be a hell lot better. Staff is either unattentive or can't be bothered to serve, and when they do, it's done rather rudely.I've come on multiple occasions over the years and this restaurant just gets worse over time.
Ordered the Hainan Chicken Rice and Pad Thai for take out. The Hainan Chicken was very good, the rice was unique and has the garlic smell. The Pad Thai on the other hand was not as good as we anticipated. I had try Pad Thai in many Thai restaurants in the GTA but this one didn't taste like the authentic Pad Thai. Also, they used fish cakes as a substitute of shrimps.
Gourmet Malaysia is known best for the variety of its authentic & scrumptious Southeast Asian dishes, such as Malaysian, Singaporean, and Indonesian. The restaurant itself is spacious, perfect for family & friends gathering. Our must order:* Singapore Laksa - Vermicelli served in coconut curry broth that is fragrant, creamy, and rich, topped with fishcake, prawns, chicken, tofu puffs. If you like spicy, you can request it to be spicier.* Char Kway Teow - flat rice noodles stir fried with huge-succulent shrimp, squid, eggs, bean sprouts. So delicious!* Roti & Curry - my fave part is dipping the roti to the curry. You can choose either beef or chicken. If you’re missing your hometown or travel to Asia, checkout this spot in Scarborough to satisfy your cravings. They’re under renovation right now and will reopen soon, can’t wait to go back to see the new look of it.
Malaysian | Singaporean | Indonesian | Thai | Non-LLBO | Closed Mon-Wed | Take Out & Catering | Banquet HallCOVID protocols in placeBeen here many times even before covid.Spacious restaurant ready for banquet hall events. They even have a mini mart to purchase snacks and seasonings.Service is good. Cantonese speaking.I just wish they served alcohol especially serving spicy food, I was definitely craving for some beer.Ikan Bakar (stingray) 蕉葉焗魚:Always order first because it takes 25 mins to make. The flesh of the fish is tender and falls off the bones and the bones are soft bones.I always order it when I'm here.Penang Stir-fry noodles with seafood 檳城炒貴刁It reminded me of 乾炒牛河 without the beef. I was expecting more texture and different style of noodles. There weren't as many seafood, there were a few shrimps be calamari.Probably wouldn't order this again.Salt & pepper calamari 椒鹽魷魚:It was freshly fried, better than the HK styles. It doesn't come with much taste if you don't eat it with the chiilis but they did offer me sauce on the side that tastes kind of like chili paste.Overall I'd definitely come back when I'm craving for some comfort and heat. I just wish they served alcohol.
First time here but this place has been around for as long as can be remembered by many!I don’t even know what took me so long to come here, but it was definitely worth it! A southeast Asian restaurant with great flavours and such a wide variety of dishes, there’s bound to be something for everyone! They will have dishes that you may want to try something new alongside something you already know too!First time trying ikan bilis and gado gado, and it’s was such a treat! Ikan bilis is basically anchovy in a sambas sauce and this isn’t like your anchovy on a pizza, this was so tasty! The texture was tender and had a nice little chew to it which I enjoyed. Gado gado is a salad consisting of fried tofu or tempeh drenched in a delicious peanut sauce. This was such an awesome dish filed with flavour and so many different textures! The beef rendang, curries, and the noodles were also very tasty and flavourful! These dishes are what you’d expect and possibly already know of, but still so good! The service was on point! And the owner took the time to get to know us and as well ensure everything was great!Definitely a place to go to with the family and they have that old school style Chinese restaurant vibe which is very nostalgic.Great job!Follow me on IG @thirst_and_taste for better pics and more amazing content!
I have always been a fan of Gourmet Malaysia since I was a kid. My family would come here for a quick lunch, and head over to Woody Woodchuck to spend rest the afternoon (Yes, THAT long ago) lol. Coming back here every time brings back a lot of memories ^^ The restaurant décor inside remains the same- a classic, old school-styled restaurant. Menu is even more nostalgic with the unforgettable Disney font!Items I would highly recommend trying:#14 - Gado Gado nonya mixed salad in peanut sauce (fried tofu, not spicy)#18 - Special Gourmet Malaysian Platter (it has Thai fish cake, chicken and beef satay, golden shrimp rolls, mango salad, spring rolls)#33 - Roti Cannai is a MUST (comes 3 pcs of crispy roti with choice of chicken or beef curry)#161 - Beef Rendang (not spicy)#191 - Peneng Char Kwei Teow (aka fried hor fun with mixed seafood, not spicy)#194 - Seafood scrambled egg fried hor funThe menu is absolutely extensive; there is definitely something for everyone. Vegetarian options available (a whole big section too!) It was very nice meeting, Yummy, the owner of Gourmet Malaysia during my most recent visit. He is very friendly and sociable, and he makes you feel right at home! His wife is actually the head chef of the restaurant, and leading the staff in creating all these gourmet dishes on the menu. Can't wait to visit again! I'm craving hor fun ^^ Until next time!
We ordered Indonesian fried rice, fish fried fillet, green curry chicken and a Malaysian beef item. Green chicken curry was good, rests all items are tastes like any other hakka chinese, nothing special. I didn’t find any different taste. Pretty basic. Halal restaurant and overall its good family fine dine.
Instagram @chopstixinthesix Follow Us!!We got Beef Satay, Belacan Seafood Hor Fun and Veggie Roti Cannai. Beef Satay came with 6 skewers, meat was tender, seasoned perfectly, and the satay sauce was so good that we wanted to take some home. Seafood Hor Fun came in great portion, the fried rice noodles were spicy, flavourful, and the seafood variety was amazing! Veggie Roti Cannai came with 3 Roti, that were crispy, the vegetarian curry was so-so, we prefered dipping the satay sauce instead!
