Here is my experience:The prices are aggressively low compared to other Hakka places. The portions are huge! We had a tone of left overs to take home. The food was hot and fresh.Although they were short staffed. The food was excellent, the staff were friendly.Growing up , China cottage was a to go for me. I have been eating here for the past 10-12 years! Highly recommend!
We had heard alot about this place from friends and decided to try take out. The menu is vast and you get to choose from a variety of meats as well. We stuck to chicken and ordered quite a lot. Waiting time was around 20 mins as informed by the server. The staff is quite accommodating & polite.Coming to the food, the quantity of one dish is enough for two people and some leftovers!Taste wise, I would say they have done a great job. What I did not like is the addition of food colouring. Their Schezwan rice was definitely not spicy as it looked, it was just normal fried rice painted red.Apart from that, I feel it is value for money & a good place for Hakka lovers!
Date visited : Saturday April 02, 2022Overall Rating for experience : 4/5Comments :We've been coming to China Cottage even before pandemic, just getting around to the review now tho lol. We came for lunch special after we finished our grocery haul for the coming week. They are now accepting Dine-In business again woohoo!!Service : 4/5On this visit we did have an attentive server. Checking on us at regular intervals, checking water levels etc.Food : 3/5Normally I would rate the dishes we have at China Cottage more at 4/5 but this visit, was leaning more towards a 3/5. For this specific visit, we ordered off the Lunch specials menu : Ginger Beef, Chicken Teppanyaki & Chimken Hakka Noodles. The Ginger Beef was so red in color, no idea what they added to make it dark red. Also, there was barely any Ginger flavor also was lacking the spicy as the server had told us. As for the Chicken Teppanyaki, it was just okay, I had forgotten that I had ordered the dish before in 2019. The Chicken Hakka Noodles were also more from meh-okay. My wife likes Hakka noodles. So we had enough leftovers of the noodles for her to bring to work. Likely we won't be ordering their Ginger Beef and Teppanyaki Chicken again. There are other Chicken lunch offerings I have tried in the past and have enjoyed more. I'm kinda stuck with Chimken offerings due to beef and pork are an avoid due to managing gout.Drinks :The lunch specials come with the option for a soft drink. Tho I did make a recommendation that at least for those customers that are diabetic there should be a different option than a soft drink. Appears that they do have an option for Chinese Tea.Portion Size Value for Money Spent : 4/5For a Lunch special at $9.99 CAD you get a good amount of rice + the entree ordered.Worth a repeat visit :Of course! As mentioned we've been somewhat regular diners here pre-pandemic.
Been going there since the day it opened almost 2 times a week to now never going there again. the food just gets worse and worse everytime and I think this is the last time I'll be going there. Got the Manchurian chicken and vegetableballs with gravy and it was like jello. The rice was good but a bit under cooked. Found many little bones in what's supposed to be the boneless Manchurian chicken.. bring the quality back to normal.
China Cottage is an excellent Chinese restaurant with exceptional customer service, delicious food, and a very lovely environment to dine in for any occasion.Moon and his staff are very kind, hospitable, and polite. All of our family love their food, my five year old daughter loves their Hakka Noodles so much that she wanted to give them 600 star review. My other daughter's love their Chicken 88, Bombay chicken, Fried banana with Ice cream, and their steamed rice. If you're looking for tasty Chinese food with great service this is the place to go.
Dining in is not possible any more, but they made the necessary modifications and we can still get the chili chicken we adore. Feel free to ask for the desired spiciness. The hakka noodles should be ordered everytime, even if it's for tomorrow's lunch. YUMMY!
Terrible food. Too much salt! I ate the food and received a bad headache in return. Spend your money wisely and health is more important that taste. They probably put MSG in the food and I highly recommend that you ask if msg is present on your food, and if it is, do not get it. If you can ask them not to put this in your food in advance then it is better, but good luck with SALT content. For me, I am done with this place.
A few times I have been disappointed with the oil levels of the food. Food swimming with oil...otherwise taste great. Not healthy.
Food is not consistent. Maybe the chef is different from day to day. Ordered for new years the Coconut chicken soup barely had any chicken and no coconut it had no flavour just like the ginger beef had no flavour. Singapore fried rice had no curry no soysauce barely any flavour, rice was mushy. Was this chef aprentice night??? Fried shrimp was good , chicken pakoras were good, fish 88 and chicken 88 was okay but ive had better previously from china cottage. The love was not put into my expensive order it was rushed and tasteless
Wowwww!!! Terrible food! Ordered hot garlic chicken, mix noodles, and some spicy shrimp thing. Shrimps were okay. Chicken and noodles were more bland than baby food. Did they run out of salt??? That's how bad the food was. Had to use tabasco sauce to get it down my throat. Only reason for the 1 star is because no option for 0 stars. Worst hakka food ever! Stay away everyone.
