The soup tasted like flour and was so thick it was like eating glue. The sopes has the thinnest layer of beans that I couldn’t even taste them. The sope tart was fluffy and the meal was mostly lettuce. For $4.00, I had a small serving of green salsa that was flavourless. The music was so loud, it was like clubbing. Waste of money. They have no idea what Mexican food tastes like. Not even Tex-Mex.
The last time we went to La Bonita, we couldn’t stop talking about it and saying we needed to go again. Fast forward 10 months and we revisited the restaurant and it was ….meh. The food was ok but there was something lacking from the last time went. The flavour was muted, the portions were much smaller (last time we couldn’t finish our plates, this time it was no problem and we snacked when we got home), and we didn’t get the side of delicious hot sauces that we got last time. The tomatillo sauce was the star of our last visit, this time it was barely there and had zero flavour. But the food was a shining star compared to the abysmal service. 20 minutes waiting for our drinks. No one came around to see if we wanted anything else. Our initial server never did anything but take our order - she was too busy spending the majority of our time there visiting with a couple she obviously knew and showing them videos on her phone. It’s ok to stop and have a quick chat if you know someone, but honestly this went on FOREVER. We were excited to return to La Bonita but this latest visit has soured our experience. But there are too many other great restaurants around to dwell on a bad experience so we won’t be back.
Great reminder of our time in Mexico. Some very authentic food choices and a good selection of Mexican beers. They use corn tortillas, a great start. Two deductions. One for using feta(!) on tacos. The other is the overly showy margaritas. They don't offer a basic model.
Great authentic Mexican food with very original drinks, and the atmosphere is perfect for a fun night out with friends or family! My only quarry is that for one meal and one drink, it can be quite pricy (around $40)!Well worth it every once in a while, as you can’t get as authentic as La Bonita.
This is a review of my three experiences there. It's fun that I can order in Spanish. Anyway, enchaladas and burritos were always good. Last summer I sat down to have I think a Michelada which is tomato juice with beer... what a presentation and taste on a decent patio. I also appreciate the good service, decor and atmosphere, something rare in Ottawa.
I have had better mexican food than this. But wouldn’t give less stars because the service was good and overall good exp
The place is super cute! Love the food as well
I have eaten here 3 times and must say that the food is rather mediocre. The tortillas arrived soggy, then the other food is laced with so much cheddar that it is extremely greasy. The saving grace - and why I gave it another star - is that the drinks have a fancy impressive look but when you really check it out, all the skewers of fruit are the same. Not too authentic, and -- would be nice if someone here actually spoke Spanish to improve the atmosphere.
Had a nice time here with some friends tonight- the only downside was that the music was extremely loud (perhaps because we were sitting very close to the speaker)- I had to yell all night! The three tacos were also a bit overpriced. Not recommended for people who tend to get sensory overload. Our server was very nice and the food tasted delicious.
The ambiance, service, and food are all fabulous. I'm not in a position to tell whether or not the food is "authentic," but it certainly is fresh. This is an ideal place to spend a Friday night out with friends. It's also a great place for a date.
