Sharing a photo here of a recent dinner with my Dad who has been a loyal GP customer since they first opened. I'm not sure what more needs to be said about the egg rolls, but the fact that I often willingly pay over a hundred dollars to have them shipped should tell you that they don't mess around. Excellent chicken fried rice, ribs, and chow mien. A staple for anyone from Ottawa, and worth a stop every time I'm in town. I love eating here as the decor adds so much to the experience. Lovely people, and I dare you to phone in an order from over a kilometre a way and try to get to the restaurant before it's ready...
First time here after hearing so many good reviews. Amazing place, Wayne the server for 20 years was very professional and friendly. Excellent food taste and quality.
We recommend it all!!! From the moment we walked in we were treated like royalty The food was fabulous! The staff was exceptional. ?
Tried the food after seeing a news story announcing their dine in re opening. I was excited to support local and enjoy some good food. I was sadly mistaken. The egg rolls certainly have changed, prices are up quality is down. Food arrived using a delivery app and came cold and uninspired. Very small portions. Greasy. and missing items. Far more superior choices out there. Save your money and look elsewhere. A disappointment in a box
all the portion were small for the price paid it was horrible. the food was cold and slimy. the egg rolls that this place is so popular for were disgusting. warning do not order from here. it is a big zero . an F. it sucked.
Been a loyal customer since moving to Bytown in '88. Food was always tasty, reasonably fresh, and hot. After two yrs absence because of COVID was excited to return this week. Despite seeing many awful reviews of their takeout during the pandemic I was excited about coming back. Have to say some or all of the negative reviews were not off the mark. The worst chicken fried rice I've ever had since I started going to chinese restos in the early 60s. Rice was dry, tasted old, and diced chicken and green onion had been sprinkled on top! Chow mien was ok as were the chicken balls but this was the only time in my life that I couldn't finish the fried rice. It also appears the egg rolls have shrunk. Won't be back until they up their game. Nice new tables, tho.
Untill recently, I have been supporting this restaurant for over 45 years and for the most part have been satisfied with the quality of their food, menu selection, prices, service and atmosphere. I have now stoped spending my hard earned money in this establishment, and for many reasons. #1. Treat me like a customer not a number! #2. The quality of food and serving size has taken a nose dive to hell! #3. Your prices are far too high, and not competitive ! #4. When a customer is offering some constructive critisism in a polite and professional manner, have the decency to show you're interested and that you care! Yes, the egg rolls are very good but too expensive when compared to the small size you receive. Golen Palace used to be an impressive chinese landmark in Ottawa, but not now. Too bad!
So we got some take out from here yesterday and it was horrible. This is what we ordered and it cost 75$.$75 for awful mushy food that had no flavour? I am so disappointed, never again. The eggrolls were lacking in flavour, the almond chicken soo guy was like soft mush as they put it all into the gravy, which was lacking in flavour. Even the plum sauce was watery and tasteless. I have never had food this horrible and we will NOT be ordering from her again. I do not understand the 5 star reviews???
Excellent egg rolls, nothing else. The “plum sauce” was a watery, flavourless dish of orange liquid the consistency of Jell-O. Just buy it from Food Basics like everyone else, guys. The spicy beef with green pepper was a bowl of celery stalks and raw onion in a sauce that was watery at best. I spooned it over the rice and it evaporated as quickly as liquid on the surface of Mars.
Review was solely based on the "Beef Fried Rice" and little plum sauce they give you for large orders of egg rolls.Purchased 18 egg rolls and one order of beef fried rice. The amount of plum sauce provided for 18 egg rolls isn't enough and the portion of the beef fried rice is by far the most pathetic small size portion I have ever gotten in my whole of ordering from a Chinese restaurant! New Hong Kong's portion would be 3X the size compared to GP. I had to take a second look at the order and thought maybe it was a free rice because I ordered over $50 but to my surprise it was my $12 order of fried rice, how sad!
