I was really excited reading the reviews for this place, and eager to try. IMHO it did not live up to the hype. It was okay. I'd give it 3.5 stars if that was an option.First, the staff are very nice and friendly. Big plus there. I had the spicy pork which seemed to be the most popular choice. It was okay. Far too much sauce IMHO, I scraped a lot of it off before eating. If I ordered again, I'd get it on the side, or not at all. The pork was okay. Not as spicy or flavourful as I had hoped. The grilled vegetables were a nice touch, I appreciated the grilled flavour, but I had two huge pieces of almost raw cabbage that detracted a little bit. The beef dumplings were okay. First one I bit into had a bone fragment....not a big deal. Taste was okay. I might try a couple more dishes to be fair, as it wasn't bad....just didn't match my expectations. Japchae and Bibimbap would be on my list next.
Okay… it might sound like I’m bashing the place, but quite the opposite.Wanted to try something different around the area. Just another lazy day that I don’t want to cook at home. The name sounded catchy, so I thought I visit.First impression… from the outside I thought it was some old beat down place that might not be very sanitary. I was wrong, you can see into their kitchen, though it wasnt very bright, it didn’t look dirty.No idea what I was gonna get, so I asked for recommendation. They didn’t give me one, they just said oh the rice is a popular choice and whatever meat you want. Boy, that lead me to 2 things, either they are very confident that everything is good or everything is meh and they don’t care.Okay… I ordered, got home, so I asked for no onions and they screwed that up. However… when I actually ate it, yum… taste like … home cooked mom’s food. Yeah, that’s right, a little taste of home.Half way through my meal, yeah, I was definitely getting full. They didn’t cheap out in the meat, you actually get a fair portion of meat versus rice.So conclusion?A very typical mom and pop shop feeling, a place I am very comfortable to go to often to support over corporate giants dominating the everyday people.Food taste?It’s not a world class, but I like it, enough to see myself go back commonly. I would say 8/10Price?Yeah it’s not expensive, it’s about the price of a McDonald’s meal, but you get soup. Healthier and imo, you actually get more.YES, I do recommend you try it out, then judge.
Undoubtedly one of THE BEST restaurants in Ontario...not just Newmarket! Not even kidding. My family and I drive all the way from Scarborough just to eat at On The Rice. Their food is AMAZING. The beef bulgogi and the spicy pork is our favourite. The meat is tender and delicious, their vegetables have that yummy grill flavour and are super crunchy, their portions are very generous, and their prices are reasonable. Their service is excellent -- always warm, inviting and attentive! They never miss a single detail of your order and are happy to serve you. I always look forward to eating On The Rice! I've been wanting to try this place based on the reviews for a little while and now that I have I'm definitely coming back! Lovely owners and delicious Korean food. I got three lunch special items: bulgogi (really good), spicy pork (even better), and the "burning yam" roll (also very very good) which is basically like a torched salmon roll but subbed with yam, so it's vegetarian but tastes just as good!! The garlic mayo on the meat dishes is such a nice touch. Almost reminds me of shawarma but with Korean food!! Best of both worlds.
Delicious food with reasonable price. And very friendly service. Would recommend it for on the rice or bento box

Wow! Really nice take out spot in the corner of a dead plaza. Definitely worth the visit.I came on 9/16/21 around an hour before closing. Ordered the A7 Takoyaki, 01 Bulgogi, and the 09 Chicken Katsu curry.All three items were made in 15 min and made on the spot, nothing prepped except for the side dishes.When I first opened the takoyaki I stared at it with disbelief because of how small it was…but I have to say that after eating it. I was astonished at how great it was. Markham has amazing varieties of takoyakis but this place definitely is in my top 5 for quality and taste!
