Great food and portions, with a beautiful patio for the summer. The Tanuki breakfast for brunch is my favorite out of the 4 dishes ee tried. Our server Rachel was so patient and friendly. They don't take brunch reservations for small groups so make sure to come early.
We love Tanuki, despite it replacing the awesome Shiso Tree located in the J-Town plaza. I've been to this restaurant a few times and the food had always been delicious, service and staff been great.Having tried quite some dishes, I really enjoyed the Kaki Fry (oysters) and Kaeshi Karaage (chicken) for appetizers. As for entrees, my favourite would be the omurice.. the curry was not bad too. The place still has a similar vibe as the previous restuarant and in the summer, you can also sit at its patio area.During the most recent visit, my party had an awkward experience which led me to minus a star. Tanuki is a very welcoming place, but since that visit, I have to reconsider truly. That day, all the waitresses were wearing really short shirts and one was even wearing an activewear outfit you would wear to a hike/gym instead of something you wear while serving tables - workout crop top and tight yoga shorts where the outline of lady parts are showing! I find this very inappropriate for the job (you aren't Hooters) and when there are kids present, especially for a family friendly dining place. Hope this gets addressed with the owner soon or a one-off.
Had brunch here and had to wait at least 30 to 45 minutes for the food to get on the table, as mentioned many times in the other reviews so I don't think it's an isolated incident. Our hot drinks were cold and pretty much finished when we could finally start to eat. Got to a point where the wait staff were just congregating at the bar, there wasn't anything else to do after serving all the drink orders and just waiting for the food to come out of the kitchen. The food was meh. Nothing special. Flavours were simplistic, and sometimes overly salty. Nothing to make me come back.Service was standard.
The Pig Knuckle is a BIG surprise!! Until it arrived at my table, I just realized how large the pig thigh was!!It has the sweet taste sauce/soup I like, and its skin just melts in my mouth, yet the meat ? is filling me with all the warm energy for the chill evening. It came with a bowl of rice with 2 sweet potato slices on the side. If you don't have a sweet tooth, then this might not be your cup of tea!!Another one is Oxtail, the most expensive one on the main course, I didn't pay too much attention to that since I am busy fighting with the knuckle, it is well made according to the friend who ordered it.And the Umeshu beverage, the sweet plums liquor, the ladies' favor, rumor said it can easily make them drunk in no time when no other foods in stomach. Better watch out!!
Food was super yummy!Pork Knuckles is e best for meGave a 4 starbecos1. I tried to call and make reservation ( knowing mothers day is crowded ) they do not accept reservations. But its not so bad but i wish they take bookings2. Lobster benedict, i personally find it pricey for $26 becos there isnt much lobster meat at all. 85% were shells. Tbh eggs n bread dont cost that much, especially not the lobster shells
Had Sunday brunch there. Taste good.
Pretty awesome Japanese restaurant!! Their Karaage tastes really good! With a touch of soy souse and sesame seeds brings the flavour to the next level. We tried Taro chips, Grilled veggies, Karaage as sides, Omurice, Curry, and fried ramen as main. Every dish tastes above expectation. The omurice is not using normal ketchup (tomato)sauce but uses mushrooms and chicken stew instead, the sauce is creamy and tasty, matching the soft eggs on the top. Another highlight is their Taro Chips!! You just can’t stop once you eat one chip!!!
Service & Food both 5 star! We decided to give a try this place and glad we tried! Their mackerel appetizer was beyond expectation! If you don't like the vinegar ish taste then it's not your cup of tea but if you do, must try! Their karaage and oxtail meal were also delicious. Apparently they change their lunch/brunch menu changes every week so we're definitely going to try them soon!
Ordered the Tanuki Coffee, Tanuki Latte, Chicken Sando, and Omurice. Food was absolutely incredible and very authentic to something you would get in Japan. Owner and staff are extremely friendly, too. Will be back again when we're in the area. Hope they eventually expand across the GTA.
Cozy lighting, friendly staff seemed clean. They have a 1$ oyster special on mondays which we happened to catch. Oysters had a clean fresh taste. We ordered karaage on the side but didn’t take a picture, it was very juicy, crispy, well seasoned and they had a glaze over it that was sweet had some dill seeds inside, was topped with jalapeños which added contrast. The mains we got were the omurice and croquettes, omurice was decent not spectacular but a good portion of food, their Demi glaze is sweeter than I expected and not extremely meaty or anything. The croquette was not worth it IMO however when you get a bite with everything (seaweed, the jam, cherry tomato and croquette) it’s pretty good. Wouldn’t order it again tho.
