To be honest, as much as I like the food we have stopped going for take out. The foam containers are a huge put off. There are not many restaurants that continue to use these foam containers but these guys do. The last few times I got take out, the foam was melted into the food. I just couldn't feed them to my kids or my husband. I called the owner before and expressed my concern over the containers and her response was that it "costs more" to use the plastic containers. I said to her, this is about your customers' health. This place has a lot of loyal customers and we use to be one of them but her response was simply not caring for the health of us and what the chemicals could do to us when we consume them. She simply only cared about the cost. Majority of restaurants don't use these foam containers anymore and even when they do, they put a piece of foil to separate the food and the foam so it doesn't melt into the food. The owner here is all about getting their money and have no care in the world about what their foam containers are doing to people's health. They don't deserve loyal customers.
Great traditional Cantonese congee restaurant that was open on Boxing Day as well (so worth the call ahead if you're not sure on hours)! They open at 8:30am for breakfast and has lots of space to dine-in. Quantity and quality of food were all great.Previously located in Market Village, they've opened here on Aug 2018 with a restaurant conveniently near Highway 404 (Steeles & Woodbine) at Woodbine and Denison. Do note, this is the plaza across from the Starbucks on the West side of Woodbine if you're looking for a landmark. This is located in a plaza with a decent amount of parking. Walking into the restaurant, you're required for the standard ID and proof of vaccination. One person will need to leave information for one person for contact tracing. Staff are quick to respond for service and food comes fairly quickly. The traditional congee originates from Sam's Congee Delight in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong. However, tasting the congee from other Hong Kong restaurants, the congee could be improved to be better. True to the authentic Hong Kong dishes, we've ordered the chicken and minced beef congee, minced beef congee, sweet cruller, dough stick rice roll, BBQ pork rice roll, and fried noodles with bean sprout. Our table agreed that the congee was edible but could be better quality overall. For example, thicker congee (ours felt more liquid/watery) and for Hong Kong-styled minced beef, it lacked texture (there should be more rice vermicelli to make bigger beef clusters). Their rice rolls were pretty good and well made. The fried noodles with bean sprouts could be fried a bit longer (as it felt closer to slight wet noodles than pan-fried/wok-infused). Overall, food is still delicious and worth coming back again.
One more amazing restaurant on my list for a great breakfast. A must-try place to experience it for yourself. The foods are great, price is very reasonable. You must try the sesame seeds balls on their menu.
I was very disappointed with Sam's Congee Delight during my last visit. I have been a loyal customer for a long time. Last Friday, I ordered a pumpkin congee for take out due to the COVID restrictions, and went home to eat it. However, from my very first spoonful I could sense that it had already turned bad. The shop was already closed so I called them the next day. The waitress who answered told me to come by to get a new order of pumpkin congee. I made the 30 minutes drive from my house to Sam's Congee only to be told that it was a misunderstanding and that they would NOT give me a new order or a refund.
First time here since they moved. Had their pork and century egg congee, fried dough stick, beef brisket, and fried noodles and beansprout. Congee comes in a large bowl that is enough for 4 servings of the smaller bowls. Their fried dough stick is a must when pairing with congee. It's made in house and is crispy, fluffy and light. Beef brisket was moist and tender(a lot better than I expected).
If your going to charge premium prices for simple fair. You need to get it right. We ordered congee with beef slices, two kind of eggs, chicken slices, fried dough and fried dough with rice sheets. The congee with beef slices was watery and the fried dough was re fried. Service was off 1/3 server was nice.
This is what a newly renovated traditional, long standing congee restaurant should look like! Great venue, clean, good staff, easy parking and consistent, reliable, good food!
Longstanding congee place. Food quality isn't bad, just a little thirsty afterwards though.
We were looking for some early morning congee so we decided to try Sam’s. The congee had plenty of toppings but it was watery. That tells me that either it was not boiled long enough or their rice used didn’t have the appropriate amount of starch. Dough fritters were okay. Next the fried noodles we ordered were cold probably was fried in a batch and I happen to get the leftovers. Rice rolls (dried shrimp)had very little ingredients better at the grocery store. Glutinous rice dumpling was not tasty and lukewarm. I’d have to agree with some of the other reviews, overpriced for the quality and small portions. If I come back it would be just because I want early morning congee and just order the congee.
Well social distanced. Checked vaccination record and ID upon entry. Foods were not bad but small portions.
