I'd heard from a friend who is a chef that the Baton Rouge in downtown Halifax had the best ribs in the city. Location is in a trendy part of Halifax and atmosphere inside restaurant was top class. However, service was slow and my son had to order his beer 3 times before he got it. Ribs were dry. I've had much better ribs from No Frills. Gnocchi was gooey and tomato sauce tasted like it came from a can. And it's expensive.
The food was great! And our waitress, Lindsey was the best!!
I enjoyed every bite. It was really tasty and the service was amazing.. I would definitely will come back
Went to restaurant today in Halifax with my wife, son, daughter and two college age grandchildren from Ontario. Waitress was attentive. However, it took almost an hour for our lunch to be served. All arrived except for my wife’s order. The hostess had to go see where it was. The calamari appetizer was hard to chew as it was tough. All of the meals were fine except for what showed up for my wife. She ordered the Louisiana chicken salad with crispy noodles and the pineapple soya sauce. It arrived with plenty of greens but no crispy noodles or sauce. The waitress went back to the kitchen and brought the items out to her. This did not make for an enjoyable outing.
I so wanted this to be an amazing experience but unfortunately it was not. We informed the maître de that it was our 30th wedding anniversary on our arrival. She sat us next to the exit doors and did not pass on that information as no one even congratulated us on the occasion. The steak was good but the sides were not at all up to par. The garlic mashed potatoes were dry and the roasted vegetables were laughable, seriously, 4 pieces of vegetables are not a side. I’m very disappointed that I picked this restaurant for such a monumental occasion
Great place. The bar is awesome
The lobster was amazing, steak on point and the service was delightful.
To be honest I was surprised by my sister’s choice. I came to Halifax to help her celebrate her birthday and said I’d take her out to dinner and she should choose where. There are more than enough options available and she said she wanted steak. I was expecting her to suggest the Keg. Since we were kids the Keg has always been the preferred choice for special family dinners. We ate at the one in North Vancouver for birthdays as kids, my wife and I have tried several of the ones in Toronto for special dinners and we celebrated our late parents 40th and 50th Wedding Anniversaries at the one in Halifax. I was surprised when she asked me to make reservations at Baton Rouge in Downtown Halifax. After our meal I was glad she did so. The location is in an old warehouse building across the street from the Historic Properties. The thick stone walls and wooden beams project a nice homey atmosphere, especially so on a rainy evening. Service was exemplary, fast and efficient. When I booked I asked about gluten free desert options? They advised me that sadly they had none but if I wished to bring my own, they’d be happy to serve it. After our meal they brought out the gluten free brownie from my sister’s favourite place that I’d dropped off when we arrived complete with a birthday candle. We both opted for steaks and they were excellent, done exactly to order and served surprisingly quickly. Amongst the sides available were some fresh and quite tasty mushrooms. As noted, I provided our own desert. Price wise, about what I expected at an upscale steakhouse chain, and reasonable considering the quality of the meal and the service. I think we’ve just started a new family tradition.
I knew we were in for a different experience when we arrived at the main entrance and the very young male host said "may I help you" like we were lost and looking for directions to a museum. Not a great start at all. Then we got seated on the second floor at a small table in the middle of the room - no view. Not good considering the main floor was almost empty - not good for a few seniors. The table server (for get her name) was terrific - very nice, quick with the drinks and friendly. Dinner was disappointing. The lobster sandwich looked like cat food on a hamburger bun. And the rib steak (most expensive item on he menu?) came with two 1/4" slices of carrot, a two or three asparagus, and something else (totally forgettable). With drinks and a tip the bill was just under two hundred - again, there are so many better options in this area that will keep a hundred bucks in your pocket. Sorry to report that this is our last visit to the Baton Rouge chain...life is too short for this mediocrity.
Atmosphere a combo of rustic and modern - loved it. Service was excellent and food was good. I felt the spinach dip could've used more garlic.
