I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is traveling to St. John's or the surrounding area. Reservations are required and there is limited street parking with no dedicated parking lot. We had a late reservation and ate outside as it was a warm night. The service was excellent, every person we spoke to was friendly and attentive. The was food divine; Skin-on cod and flat iron steak highly recommended, butterflied mackerel was also great. Confit potatoes almost stole the show, and the rhubarb cake finished off the meal wonderfully. The food is fancy but the restaurant is cozy and comfortable.
Mallard Cottage, usually a slam dunk for a high quality meal, was a bit of a let-down this evening. My main was served at room temperature, and my guess was it was ready before the rest of the table’s dishes were. Not sure why this was the case (things were busy, so that’s a guess) but it was still delicious. And while 3/4 of our dishes were great (cod tongues a highlight), the smoked short rib was not very flavourful. Always appreciate the atmosphere and attentive service, but we’ve had better meals here.
Very delicious. Recommend booking reservations as they book up quick! Menu is different during week versus Brunch only on Weekends. So we booked a second day. They’re need to change this and offer brunch menu weekdays as well. Their Price point is slightly higher side. Worth the splurge.Must try their Smoked Bacon! Thick cut full of flavour. Had 2 orders to go. Churro French toast was fantastic. Cheers.
Didn’t think we’d get in here to eat on our trip but the day before a table opened up (definitely sign up for the wait list on Yelp and you might get lucky). The service was lovely, the atmosphere was unique, and the food was unreal. Tempura capelin was the daily special appetizer and it was so good. Highly recommended!
Very Disappointed. This is somewhere I have eaten many times and always recommended highly to visiting friends and family. We would usually get the family style dinner which is when you are served 8-10 dishes off the menu to the whole table and it was always delicious and a fantastic amount of food. This month, myself and several friends went for dinner. We asked to order the family style dinner. The waitress did respond that sure we could have the chefs tasting menu. None of us at the table realized she was making a distinction. This tasting menu was $20-30 more expensive (per person) than the family style dinner but the family style dinner had gone up in price before so we just figured again the price had been raised. We had less than half the number of dishes compared to previous experiences and the portions were much smaller. We had to order extra bread for the table, and the person in our group with the smallest appetite was still hungry when we left. When we brought up at the end of the meal that we were a bit shocked that for an increased price we had so much less food than normal - this is when she informed us that the chefs tasting menu is different than the family style dinner and that the family style dinner was no longer offered anymore. I feel like this absolutely should have been addressed at the start of the meal when we specifically asked for the family style meal.As a group of foodies who are happy to pay good money for good food we were incredibly disappointed compared to past experiences. We would not recommend this to anyone as for $120 a person we felt the food portions were small and the quality of food was less than previous visits.
Great lunch at Mallard cottage! Staff was super friendly and food good! Ate outdoors as they were prepping the fire pit and I have to say the outdoors space was simply wonderful! Such a nice relaxing space!
Absolutely wonderful brunch! The place itself is beautiful enough that they could serve you an awful meal (it's not!) and it would still be good. Let's talk bread...so fluffy, so fresh, so delicious (probably so butter too..but why not right?) Great coffee, and that assorted sweet plate...man...those sweets! Worth every penny! The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is top notch! It is also a great spot for a little afternoon stroll afterwards to take in some beautiful scenery and a great way to work off all that food that you have just deliciously devoured!Special bonus points for that mallard portrait by the bathroom- I have named him Captain Quackles.I still have the most wonderful dreams about that chocolate chip cookie from my assorted sweet plate...yum yum ?
It’s the whole experience! From the time we walked in till we left … stellar service and food that was prepared with flavour that did not disappoint. Definitely recommend this place , can’t wait to go back !
Beautiful meal and awesome service
I can't justifiably give this place a bad rating because there's nothing actually bad about it. The food and service is definitely great. However, the cost certainly doesn't match the experience. I've had comparable meals for far less money. With such a limited selection menu, it leaves a bit to be desired. The food was good but I can honestly say that I'd never go back and the others that joined me all felt the same way.If you've got the money to spare and want a one time unique dining experience; this is an option. However, if you're looking for a new favorite restaurant; this isn't the place.
