We had an amazing meal at Nubo! The sushi, teriyaki and Stone Bowl Bibimbap. The food was all fresh, served quickly and decently priced. The service was really swift and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.
Went to Nubo for a quick dinner after a big day of walking. Is directly under where we were staying. We had a selection of their “scorched” sushi roll and a veggie tempura platter. House sake was hot and yummy. Would go back in a minute.
What can I say? This is a must do restaurant in Victoria. Not too large, so be prepared to wait a little. Bar seats are nicer than the tables if you are a party of two. Very friendly and efficient staff, decently priced and very very tasteful dishes, both sushi, nigiri, sashimi dishes, but also the tapas. Enjoyed every bite, too bad we were fully quite soon. Up with the best!
No reservation but the wait was very short as we arrived around 6.30 The choice is quite wide and you can find something even if you don't like fish (as my husband) We had the chicken skewers, the tuna sashimi trio, the chicken noodles and the Fisherman rolls. All of them very very good. They have no desserts.
Saucy Sushi for beginners...Nubo does not hide that they are fusion based. I'd describe it as a bit Japanese, a chunk of Chinese, overall North American focused. I would not bring my asian relations here. However, if I were on a date with a seductive southerner or someone spicy this is a great choice. What makes it Japanese? The rice is good and the nigari sushi seems to land on the fundamental taste notes. What makes it not Japanese? There is SOOO much sause that my taste palate can't find the fish. The sauce notes are Chinese: sesame seed oil, chili oil and/or smokiness... with maybe some paprika? Sashimi is an example of the Japanese simple but bold asthetic. Chinese food is delicious and there are some similar flavour palates especially with umami... but it is often more robust. What makes it North American? I ordered chirashi. The sashimi was cut so small there was little point or ability to chew it. More like one bite and down the hatch! So noticing the texture and flavour is greatly less.
We have been to Nubo on Johnson St. numerous times. Very good sushi, creative rolls to choose from and good service. We ordered a delivery service from their Pandora location. Same great, fresh sushi but the tuna sashimi and tuna on other parts of our order were paper thin. Didn’t used to be this way, nor have I seen tuna sliced so thinly at any other sushi bar in Victoria. Hopefully, just a one time issue, but if it occurs again, we won’t be back after that.
We ordered rolls to share: California, yam, mango, and pickled veg. All were delicious. All the choices around us looked just as good or better. The place is very popular and is first come, first seated. We went for Friday lunch at noon and we’re the last available table seats. The bar ended up filling up too. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Passing by. Have eaten many kinds of sushi. For the price this place was good. One thing I noticed is they use a decent quantity of fish where other places use cheap imitation crab meat instead of the better-quality fish. Overall was satisfied with the food and service. Even tried the cowboy roll which was enjoyable.
This place is SOOOO good! We tried lots of tapa style rolls, sashimi, and other dishes and they were all so delicious. The price is more than reasonable for downtown Victoria as well. We'll definitely go back when we go back to Victoria!
Best, melt in mouth sashimi I've ever had. Amazing service too. Be prepared for a bit of a wait, but trust me it's worth it.
