The Basic, formerly Joe’s Grill, is hand’s down the restaurant that impresses me most in Vancouver. It is first and foremost a diner, so take it in that context. They have amazing brunch options and are very good with gluten free options. I remember visiting San Diego’s most hyped downtown brunch diner and it had nothing on the Basic. It’s a no fuss, but also extremely casual and welcoming place. The staff are amazing and it is clear that they have excellent management as most have been around for years. That have a great outdoor patio with heaters and a street side patio in the summer. In fact, I have been so consistently happy with The Basic over the years that during the pandemic I made it a point to give extra large tips to help them out. Now that the pandemic seems to be mostly over and they are getting more business, I’m slowly returning to more regular tips, but remain just as impressed.If you are looking for a diner or brunch, look no further than The Basic. We went to the Denmar st. Location. Food was absolutely amazing. The banana pancakes were very tasty. Veggie omelette with roasted potatoes and waffles. It was all fresh and yummy and tasted homemade, which was my favorite. I was hesitant at first to try a new place but I am so glad we tried it. If you are on vacation in Vancouver. This breakfast place is a must! Prices are also good compared to other breakfast places. Staff was very friendly.
I didn’t really take pictures but ordered the corn beef hash with eggs and pan fried potatoes. While the servers were friendly, the brunch was disappointing. It really was just basic. There are a lot of amazing brunch places in Vancouver for the same price and after such high expectations as this place came recommended i felt a bit let down. It still gets the job done so might be worth it for a quick brunch along the way!
Definitely solid! Great breakfast as the name of the establishment says, and super hash browns - grilled. Food and service is super speedy and efficient staff - place was buzzing abound and full for the 45 minutes we were there. 5/5 stars all around ?
Me and my husband loved this place soooo much!! My cup of coffee was alway refilled and the food was amazing!!! I had the simply eggs , they were amazing and the potatoes it came with were the perfect kind of crunch and softness I love . My husband had the apple French roast and I had to steal some from his plate !! Amazingly delicious ! Our server was bustling and hustling and kept the place clean and ready for their next customer along with the hostess ! Noticed many repeat clients and that says a lot about how great this place is !!! Robert is a very efficient server and friendly and momo is a very lovely hostess !!!
Stopped in for breakfast and was blown away. A cozy mom and pop diner atmosphere and huge plates for the prices! Food was delicious and hearty, just like it came from moms kitchen. Highly reccomended.

I just had a baby at St. Luke’s hospital next door and my wife had a very specific, to-go breakfast request that three other restaurants said they could not accommodate. The Basic’s incredibly friendly staff not only accommodated my order but sat me down to a coffee on the house. I will be returning here with the new baby next time we are downtown.
