New update:I changed my review to 5 starsI tried this restaurant a few times after the first attempt. Food is awesome! Very authentic shanghai food! Especially pan fired bun生煎包, soy sauced duck酱鸭, Braised Spareribs in Shanghai Local Flavour红烧大排, and Dried Shelled Shrimp With Spring Onion Sauce Stirred Noodle葱油拌面.A little bit pricey, but now all restaurants are pricey. I would prefer the ones with good taste.Service is still a bit slow.rating 1 star from 3 years ago:Super chaotic management. Waiter and waitress have no idea what to do, some don’t know how to take orders, super slow services. Food is very ordinary! From a tradition “Shang Hai” background speaking. Not that attractive to make me come back again. 葱油面 onion noodle is horrible. Noodles that they use is flat Hong Kong style noodle? Not authentic Shang Hai style. They do not have onions on the onion noodle cuz it is out of stock. Onion oil flavour is not rich enough, very tasteless. We haven’t try pan fried bun 生煎包 yet because it was out of stock. Wonton is not that amazing. Other restaurants have similar taste and some have better taste. Food portion is extremely small. Price is expensive for its snack size portion. For 2 people we had $50 for 2 dishes and 2 side dishes, but we were not even full. Owner does not know how to run a restaurant. Our next table waited for 45mins for their last dish to come, but for 45mins nobody told them it was sold out. We went at around 1pm. We ordered a lot of food, but after 30mins we have to ask them several times, if they still have things that we ordered available. And their answer is nothing is available now. So basically we only ordered two dishes and waited for 1hr and 30mins. Everything thing was sold out, except noodles. We waited for about 1 hour for food to come. At that time, there were only a few customers in the restaurant. There is a lack of communication between the kitchen and waitress. Waiter and waitress have no idea what’s available what is not. I heard one of the waitress ( she is not the front receptionist) complained and said “it was not my job to take orders, why customers always asked me to take their orders.” That is really an attitude problem. If it is not your duty, then you can tell customers you can find another people who takes orders. Overall, staff is not trained properly. Kitchen is not well prepared. Owner should estimate the amount of customers you will have per day and prepare food accordingly. By the time of 1pm everything is sold out and restaurant opens till 9pm. Although they said they will have more things ready at around 5pm but there is no guarantee. Might come back later to try pan fried bun. But won’t come back recently due to its service.
Overall this place is very authentic. The tastes reminded me of home in shanghai and how my grandpa would fetch dumplings from the downstairs street stall for breakfast. We ordered the classic dishes but I was surprised at the cost of those dishes. It’s very expensive for just some dumplings and noodles plus I did feel very thirsty afterwards likely from the msg.
Nice Shanghainese dim sum for lunch, kind of different from Hong Kong style dim sum. We had their specialty of pan fried dumplings, excellent dish, though very pricey, about $2.15 each. We also had a wonton soup and some veggies, all good quality. With about 10 tables occupied, there was only one server looking after everyone, kind of slow. We also had to wait for about 30 minutes for the pan fried dumplings to be served (I believe they are freshly made).Anyway we like the foods.
Really delicious dumplings! I've been searching for good pan fried soup dumplings for a while and these are really well made. Not too doughy or thick. Will be back to try something else!
All day dim sum anyone? It is nice to taste a different style of dim sum as I am used to Cantonese dishes. The dishes offered are delicious and well prepared. This is an international chain. Nicely decorated restaurant, closer to fine dining, tables well spaced apart or they have booths. The service was very good. There is a neat bicycle table near the entrance displaying some of their dishes. We enjoyed their pan fried dumplings, both pork and pork &shrimp versions, sauteed spicy pork with noodle soup combination, jelly fish and chicken soaked in wine.
Famous global restaurant known for pan fried shanghai soup dumplings. They have 3 locations, 2 in Asia and only 1 in Canada!!We had to try their shrimp and pork dumplings. we enjoyed their traditional methods of preparing and cooking.Meat and filling is carefully wrapped in a bun dough that's steamed and then pan fried in a giant hot wok/pan. One side toasted while the other remains soft. The bun later is thin. The soup and filling VERY sweet.Scallion noodles were good, but simple. So they were overpriced IMO. Served with egg soup with has a good clear ginger and pork/bone flavour.Decor is very nice. They have models of their menu items on display which is very cute.Menu is small. Slightly overpriced, ESPECIALLY when you know Richmond is just a few minutes drive away...
Definitely authentic Shanghai local specialty. What was a pleasant surprise for me was that they even have the authentic Shanghai rice vinegar to go with the shengjian bao. Best dishes are shengjian bao, fresh meat wonton soup, Shanghai veggie and meat wonton, vegetarian chicken.
Authentic Shanghai food with reasonable price. Very delicious will definitely come back again!
Small dish was good.
Drop in to checking on my aunt , it is a while since we last saw each other , we went to Dong Tai Xiang for late lunch , the whole place is empty ?? America , surprised I find the taste and quality almost the same , some items ever lot better , decor very spacious and clean , airy , we both feel very comfortable about it , menu is not too over size , lot to choose from , if you first time visit , relax , there is a picture beside each food dish , so you know what you going to get , also there is a lot of " Usual " dishes if you are a adventures guy ! there signature dish is the pan fried Dumpling and noodles , we both order the Dumpling , Spring Roll , Pork cutlet , Yangchun Noodle the Scallion noodle to share , and the food quality excellent , I find the Yangchun noodle little sweet but the Scallion noodle very tasty , the pork cutlet is little dry , but taste great with the noodle , of course the pan fried dumpling is juicy and delicious , a classic dishes , little pricy but worth it , staff very friendly , people got to understand this restaurant is a truly 100% authentic Shanghainese , the ingredients and the cooking style is different them average Shanghai restaurants in Vancouver , we both do enjoyed the food and time together , I have no problem come back here for their Dumping !
