Lively ambiance, great food, fast service. Highly recommend it!
Ever wondered what a Parisian cafe is like? Check out Au Comptoir ? It’s obviously not Paris, but the ambiance is very stereotypical with the waiters speaking French and all.The food was delicious, portions are smaller than your typical North American size (probably for the better), and they had great attention to detail for how the food looked. My personal favourite was the duck salad, because it wa se ouch food to make me content, yet I didn’t feel heavy or lethargic afterwards. I didn’t personally try the burger but my mom enjoyed it, and the Moltan cake was good, especislly with the raspberry sorbet (as expected). Lastly, the cappuccinos are strong… if you need that caffeine kick, get the espresso. It left me buzzing ?It’s not a cheap eat, but the price matched the quality of food and I would definitely come back. It’s really just a cute, charming cafe.
Very delightful French café. Great atmosphere, delicious food and friendly staff. We had the croque monsieur, and cauliflower soup served chilled (great for summer). All their furniture (notice the singer tables) seem like antique pieces which creates an authentic vibe.
Great place with lots of knowledge. I had a friend translate for me and it was great.
Absolutely fantastic dining experience. I had always wanted to walk in and I finally tried Au Comptoir. Ordered 2 Entrecote steaks. Beautifully cut, cooked and served. Atmosphere is reminiscent of a Brasserie (on the modern side) of Paris with a highly skilled and welcoming owner. Service, food, prices, ambience basically everything gets five stars.:)
Brunch: Well presented food. Flavour ranged from good to exquisite.Good: I tried the sweetbreads. It didn't quite capture the richness of sweetbreads I tried some months ago at an Argentinean steakhouse overseas. It was rather bland. The pea puree underneath was nice for bringing the flavours together of the whole dish. The other components: Eggs, radish, potatoes, were okay... Nothing mindblowing.Exquisite: Dessert pastry of the day was excellent, a very rich cream filled choux with subtle pistachio flavour that was not too sweet, with subtle drizzle of caramel sauce. Even with the cream it felt light and was a nice way to finish.Baguette that was just a side as bread was very fresh. I think all their baked goods must be good here.Mains are around $20-30 dollars. Desserts around $10-15.Quite busy around 1-2pm. No reservations. Try your luck! I think the steak looked nice as a main. I liked the dessert so much, i could come only for that. Excellent baking.
The place is small and cozy, the server are very friendly and helpful, they give good recommendations to try dishes and cocktails. The food is delicious, the stake is 100% recommended. The deserts have the right sweetness. This place is an excellent choice for dinner.
Food was excellent but guest service experience ended up being very poor. I will not return because of this issue. This is a lively French bistro in our neighborhood that my husband and I were looking forward to going to for a nice date night dinner out. We went early (5pm) and got seated right away (they don’t take reservations). The service was fine but having worked in the service and hospitality industry myself for almost 40 years, I do recognize great and/or exceptional service. We didn’t get that at Au Comptoir. Like I mentioned, service at first was fine, but nothing worth noting. My husband started with the French Onion soup and I started with a simple mixed green salad. The soup was delicious and just the right amount as an appetizer. My salad was fresh and crisp and had just the right amount of dressing. Very good starters to our meals. For our mains, my husband had the PEI Ribeye steak. It was tasty, done to perfection, and served with frites and a side of mixed greens. I had the scallops which were done perfectly, melted in my mouth. Certainly no complaints for our mains either. For dessert we shared the daily special which was a rhubarb Mille feuille. This was a lovely finish to our dinner. Nice and crisp and not too sweet. When the bill arrived, I presented my 2 VISA gift cards along with my American Express card to pay the balance. I had 2 X $100 VISA gift cards. I received these cards as a gift from work. I’ve used these exact same VISA gift cards many times in the past at various different restaurants not only locally, but in other cities in Canada and the US with no problems. I am very aware of the rules and regulations of these cards and know how to use them. The server refused to accept these gift cards saying “there have been problems and the cards will be declined”. I told him I was quite sure there will be no issues since I’ve used these cards at various restaurants in the past. Again he was adamant that they would not accept these cards and he said he’d send over the manager. The manager then came over and again refused to accept my cards. I told him they are accepted anywhere VISA I accepted and he again started to get quite rude with us and told us they will be declined and then he’d have to “charge me twice”. I didn’t understand his explanation of this and I asked him to please try. He continued to refuse and said they’ve only had problems with these cards bin the past. I finally had to pay the entire bill with my Am/Ex card. We were not at all impressed with the way the staff and manager dealt with this issue and we left the restaurant feeling very “unvalued”. Not exactly the way we should feel after spending over $200 in our neighborhood trying to support local businesses. Needless to say, we’ll never return to this establishment and I certainly won’t be recommending it. I work in the hospitality/travel industry and meet many people coming to Vancouver looking for restaurant recommendations. Au Comptoir will not be on my list to recommend even though the food was delicious. Dining out is more than simply enjoying good food. Service and customer satisfaction is part of the whole experience. Au Comptoir failed badly with customer service and dining experience.
I'm very thankful to have this beautiful French restaurant in my neighborhood. Finally tried it for the 1st time. You have to get there early as its 1st come 1st served and due to it's exceptional service and food it's busy but well worth the wait. I went for dinner but plan on returning very soon for their breakfast. You couldn't go wrong with anything on the well thought out menu. But you must try the cheese board served table side. Enjoy!
As someone who has visited France several times, this is the closest imitation to a truly authentic french experience I have seen in Vancouver. The food is delicious, the staff is very friendly and my favorite part was that the dessert was both exceptional and deliberate. It did not feel like an afterthought on the menu. I recommend checking this place out!
